For Dharmasastha,

I wished to make a website which contain each and everything about Sabarimala. I think that Lord Ayyappa helped me to fulfill my wish. I knew that I could do this task, only by the mercy of him. This may not be giving you the complete knowledge about Sabarimala. But I hope that this will give you a vague idea about the history of Sabarimala.

I dedicate this website on the foot of Lord Ayyappa Swami.

Lord Manikandhan

The king who ruled the places Madura, Ramanadhapuram and Thirunalveli was assassinated by Thirumalai Naykkar, the minister of Vijayanagar. Once some parts of Travancore is ruled by the King of Pandya. They used Tamil as their ruling language. Before 800 years ,a royal family named Chembazhangattu Kovilakam was ruling Pandalam.

Rajasekhara was one of the famous king who ruled Pandalam. He was brilliant and loyal to people. People are highly satisfied under his ruling. But hi hadn't any child. The king and the people are worried about that. Because they didn't have a Price whom they wanted to rule them after the death of the King. Somebody advise him to pray Lord Siva. He had done the same for the sake.

At this time, Mahishasura the son of Rambhasura performed a sustained penance and pleased Lord Brahma. The boon wanted by him was that he hadn't killed by anyone from Earth. The boon was granted. He unleashed terror in the earth. He became more and more cruel everyday. So gods decided to take a proper Acton. They appealed Lord Chandika to find an end of the cruelty made by Mahishasura. Lord Chandika accepted their request and she killed Mahishasura. Rambhan had a brother named Karambhan and he had a daughter named Mahishi. The killing of Mahishasura by Lord Chandika increased the anger of Mahishi. She underwent hard penance and obtained boons from Brahma. As per the boons obtained, Mahishi could be only killed by the son born to Hari (Lord Vishnu) and Haran (Lord Siva). She thought that this is an impossible prospect. This made her more proud and cruel. She unleashed the terror in three worlds. Mahishi stopped all the scared rituals. The Mother Earth was suffered by the crimes. She appealed to the Lords for saving her from the cruelty of Mahishi. They promised proper action.

After this incident, "Palazhimadhana" was happened. Both Gods and Asuras are took part in this job. This was demanded for obtaining Amrith to cure the Gods of aging. When Amrith was separated from Sea of Milk, the Asuras took it. Lord Vishnu was ready to recover it from them. The Lord himself transformed into a beautiful women named Mohini. Asuras already began to fight on each other. Mohini appeared in front of Asuras. They were shocked by her divine beauty. They were suddenly agreed to her demand for dividing Amrith. They were shut their eyes and sat down on the floor. Mohini took the Amrith and escaped from there. Mohini had given this to Gods.

By hearing this, Lord Siva expressed his wish for seeing Mohini. Lord Vishnu was suddenly turns to Mohini. Lord Siva was stunned by her beauty. Their union resulted the birth of a child (Hariharasutha). Suddenly Mohini disappeared. Lord Siva put an ornament (Manimala) on the neck of the child. Mhadeva placed him on the river of Pampa. At the same time the king of Panthalam, reach the place for hunting. He was attracted by the voice of a child. He searched the place for finding the child. He was in a dilemma. Suddenly a Saint was appeared in front of the King and said him to took that child with him. He named him as Manikandha because of the ornament that was given by Lord Siva. He continued that after 12 years he could knew the origin of the child. The king was delighted and took the child with him. Queen too loved the child. Mankandha's arrival gave many good signs for the royal house.

After some years, the Queen had given birth of another child. But both the king and queen consider Manikandha as their follower. Manikandha had all noble qualities. He mastered all knowledge. His teacher already decided that he was a divine child. So he asked Mankandha's help at the completion of his studies. The teacher had a child who was duff and dump. The teacher requested him to take away the illness. Manikandha called that child and touched his head. Suddenly he was able to talk. Manikandha told his teacher to keep this as a secret. He was interested in state's affairs. When a Islam named Vaver created troubles in some parts of Pandalam, Manikandha fight against him and defeated him. At the same time he won his friendship too. There after Vaver became the close friend of Manikandha.

Minster of Pandalam is jealousy over Manikandha. He thought that if the king didn't get the child, he would be the next king. Day after day his anger towards Manikandha increased. He decided to harm the prince. So he started to tell concocted stories to Queen. He was succeed in his job. One day queen was pretending that she had severe headache. None of the court's physician could cure. The scandalmongers told that that would only be cured by the milk of leopard. King sent some people for fetching milk. But none of them did not win. King was worried. At that time Manikandha came to him and said that he would go to forest. But the king would not agree. But the prince would stand on his decision. At last king would allow him to go to the forest.

Actually fetching leopard's milk was just an excuse. Manikandha was incited by the Gods that it was the time for him to kill Mahishi. As soon as Manikandha knew the cruelty of Mahishi. At this time Mahishi conquered the heaven. Manikandha entered in to the heaven and started fight against Mahishi. At the end of the fight Manikandha pulled down her in to Earth and killed her. Her body fell at the bank of river Azhutha.Lord Siva and Lord Vishunu were watching the battle at a place later known as Kalaketti. This name was given to the place because Lord Siva tied his ox (Kala) in a tree. The soul of Mahishi was released. She fell in love with her survivor. But Manikandha had decided to be a Brahmachari. To cosole her he said," Soon I will be settled at one shrine. I will give you a place near me. If no first timer visits me during a whole year, I will accept you".

Indra turns into the form of a she leopard and other Gods are turns into it's children. They appeared in front of Manikandha. He mounted the she leopard's back and returned Palace. Other leopards and their children followed Manikandha. When he reached the country, people ran away with fear. At that time King said that queen's diseases could be cured, when Manikandha went to the forest. King said him to leave off leopards in to the forest.

Manikandhan told that he wanted to leave the place. The king was worrying a lot for hearing this news. Manikandha continued that he would not leave them. He told," Make me a shrine for me close to Shabari's Ashram. Let the construction party to search for this arrow of mine. The exact place will be shown by this arrow". Thus the construction of famous temple was begun. Manikandha had promised few others to be honored with him. They are Ganapathi, Najaraja, Vavar, Kadutha and Mahishi who later known as Malikapurathamma. Even now Malikapurathamma is waiting for Manikandha's arrival. The statue of Manikandha was placed by Saint Parasurama.

After the completion of the temple the number of visitors increased every year.
