ORIGINS OF THE SYNDROME CONCEPT
During the last ten years we have seen the terms "pre-eclamptic syndrome" or equivalents being used increasingly by authors in their texts but not formally included in the titles. When and how did this syndrome concept appear formally in the title of a given article?  Although several authors hinted at such concept in their writings, like W J Dieckman using the plural "toxemias of pregnancy" in his book, but leaving the matter undecided between different disease entities or different clinical pictures of the same disease, did not approach the issue as a syndrome. Nor did G.W. Theobald with his division of pre-eclamptic cases as "obligatory or putative". So, we believe that the first time the concept of a toxemic (pre-eclamptic) syndrome appeared formally in the medical literature was in 1970 ( 32 years ago) in the J. Reprod. Med. 1970;4:19-28 with the complete title being "Some aspects of the toxemic syndrome in a sector of the Mexican population" by  Lopez-Llera M.M. and Rubio L.G.
But, if you disagree and have more reliable and extensive information we would be very happy to change our impression on this matter.
I would like to point out that in this article mentioned above we also launched the concept of "multiple factors in the etiology " of this syndrome, but this will be the subject of another section in this web page.
Thank you!!
