Activities: Dr. Loryn Frey has participated in Faculty
Development for almost a year now, and with the completion
of her recital on October 10, 2000, will have finished
probably one of the most intense personal performing and
coaching seasons in her 25 year teaching career. Beginning
last September of 1999 Dr. Frey brought in to the college
pianist/accompanist and vocal coach Daniel Lockert from
San Francisco. After working together intensely over a
long weekend they appeared in recital September 14th.
In February of 2000 Dr. Frey again brought Mr. Lockert
back to Alexandria/Pineville for more coaching and a half
recital of French song presented to the Matinee Music
Club of Alexandria February 3, 2000. As the recipient
of the Faculty Development Summer Sabbatical she flew
to San Francisco on June 16th to work intensively in preparing
a recital of new literature (new to her). Some of this
music was presented in recital in San Francisco on the
Noon Days Summer Concert Series June 21, 2000. This concert
included the song cycle CHANSONS DE RONSARD by Darius
Milhaud, "Im Zimmer" and "Die Nachtigall" by Alban Berg,
"Ich wollt ein Strausslein binden" and "Amor" by Richard
Strauss and "Liebesbriefchen" by E. W. Korngold, The San
Francisco recital concluded with "Mariettas Lied zur Laute"
from Korngold's opera DIE TOTE STADT. Dr. Frey will be
appearing with Julie Miller on October 10. The program
will be expanded to include more of the lieder of Berg
and Strauss, Gordon Meyers' settings of quotations of
Mark Twain, baroque French melodies, and "I want Magic"
from Andre Previn's opera A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE based
on the Tennessee William's play. The recital will be presented
Tuesday night, October 10, 7:30 p.m. in Presser Recital
Hall, Weathersby Fine Arts Building, Louisiana College,
Pineville, LA.
In
addition to attending the National Association of Teacher's
of Singing Alexander Technique workshop in November, in
which she was an active participant, she has also attended
with her students some of the Houston Grand Opera 1999/2000
productions. Although used to rewriting and editing existing
operas for her student Opera Theater productions Dr. Frey
undertook to completely alter and modernize Gilbert and
Sullivan's TRIAL BY JURY into the hilarious comedy
TRIAL BY JUDY for the fall opera production in
which she appeared in the title role of Judge Judy. (pictured
