Cameras
A good Camera is VERY important to a Ghost Hunter whether just a beginner or professional.  You'll want one with good quality and zoom.  You don't need an expensive camera to get good results.  I personally suggest using a digital camera because you can check the photo immediately and take a follow up picture if there's an anomaly in the first shot but a film camera works just as well.  Of course you'll want to use the flash in dark areas but don't be fooled by light reflection and think it's an Orb.  Also a camera of good quality with a flash will pick up dust particles, don't be fooled by that either.  Digital cameras run as low as $60 with pretty good quality.
Video Recorders
A Video camera is an important tool to the investigator.  Motion video is more impressive than a photo most of the time.  It's better for Orb study because you'll be able to see the movement of the object and judge better whether what you're looking at is dust, a bug, or something else.  Also a Video Camera will catch strange movement of objects.  If you wish to put the Videos you shoot on a computer or website a Digital Video Camera is suggested otherwise a Video Tape Recorder is fine.  You can usually get a good Video Camera for around $100.
Sound Recorder
WARNING: When Hunting EVP and asking questions DO NOT Use any terms indicating that the spirits you are trying to contact are dead.  Sometimes they do not know they have passed and it could be DANGEROUS to bring it to a spirit's attention
Your best choice is a Digital Sound Recorder.  You can save sounds corresponding to dates and put recordings into individual folders.  With a digital recorder you can put the sounds on your computer and use software to separate sounds to focus on a particular noise.  I use Wavepad Download it for Free HERE. Digital recorders usually run from $70-$200.  I got mine at Best Buy for $80.
When searching for EVP you'll need some sort of sound recorder.  If you choose to use a casette recorder make sure to use one that the microphone is separate from the unit.  Units with the mic built in will record the noise generated from the inner workings.  A good recorder will cost around $20-$70.
