| Sitting quietly is to use 'chi' (energy, life force) to nourish 'ching' (essence, vigor), and to use 'ching' to enhance 'shen' (spirit, divine). When 'chi' is sufficient, 'ching' is abundant, and when 'ching' is abundant, 'shen' is lucid. Sitting quietly is the first step of Longevitology, which will greatly benefit the process of adjustments and their effects.
When we sit quietly, our minds calm down. As if looking in a mirror, we can clearly see ourselves. Oftentimes, when we are in this state, one scene after another appears in our minds, as ripples in a sea. These images are the wandering thoughts that have accumulated from our daily attachments. When these wandering thoughts appear, most people try hard to avoid them, or use other methods to replace, or even suppress them. These are not the ways to correct the sources of these problems. In order to dispose of these wandering thoughts, we must first realize how they entered into our hearts. Experience tells us that among these images are probably our desires and future anticipations. These Images of the past, present, and future follow us as attachments and are difficult to get rid of. Emotions such as happiness, anger, joy, love, hatred, greed, frustration, foolishness.. .ete, are the 'seeds' of our thoughts that have been secretly planted in the fields of our heart (mind) without our knowledge. These 'seeds' of our wandering thoughts bud and grow while we meditate. To get rid of these wandering thoughts, we must not avoid them, but face them. We must confront the cause, the motive, the process, and the results of these thoughts by using our objective wisdom. Furthermore, we must use this wisdom to examine ourselves, forgive others, and eradicate our bad roots through confession. We can only rely on ourselves to cleanse the toxins from our souls and to eliminate the disturbance of wandering thoughts; no one can help us but ourselves. Hence, through 'self-examination' and 'confession', we are able to comprehend ourselves better. Let us understand the events of our lives and the reasons behind them. Based on the understanding of these reasons, let us give up our attachments to the past, the present, and the future, thus eradicating our wandering thoughts. The wise can turn-back time through self-examination. A resurrected person regains life by confession. |
