North District  Waterfall Hikes

Overall Run Falls

93 Foot Tall

Mile 21.1

6.4 Miles Roundtrip

3 hours

This is a hike to the tallest falls in the park. This trail is a difficult one, but well worth the hike. In the mid to late summer months, there maybe little or no water in this falls. There are two ways to hike to the falls. One is from the Mathews Arm Campground and from the Hogback Overlook. I prefer the Mathews Arm Campground route due to the fact it is shorter and the trail is in good shape. You will proceed to the north end of the campground. If the campground is not busy, they will allow you to drive to the trail head, if not, you must park at the amphitheatre and walk through the campground. At the concrete marker, turn onto Mathews Arm Trail and the yellow blazes of the fire road. You will continue on until you reach the Tuscarora-Overall Run Trail.

If you decide to start the trail from Hogback Overlook at mile 21.1 then you park in the lot just south of Hogback Overlook parking lot. A the lower end of the parking lot you will follow the A.T. to the Tuscarora Trail. Turn right and proceed 1.6 miles to the trail marker at the junction of Mathews Arm Trail.  At the trailpost, take a left and proceed north 0.5 miles to the falls. The trail goes very sharply downhill, on the edge of a deep gorge to the left. A side trail eventually will open up into a view of the waterfall. You will have a view of the gorge, valley and Massanutten Mountain. You will need to retrace your steps to complete this 3 hour hike.
