Whiteoak Canyon Falls

4.6 miles roundtrip

2-1/2 hours

This is the second highest falls in the park and a moderate hike. You will be parking at the Whiteoak Canyon Falls Parking Area at mile 42.6.

Handicapped accessible

A 1.2 mile, 1 hour circuit through a grove of giant hemlocks. Trurn onto the Old Rag Fire Road and drive 0.1 mile to the parking area. The trail will begin at the upper side of the parking area, but not down the fire road.  At 0.4 mile, turn left at trail junction. At 0.8 mile, turn left at trail junction. The trail will continue to the fire road. Trun left, hiking 0.2 mile back to the parking area.  Pets are not allowed on this trail. 


Betty's Rock

Mile 44.4

3/4 hour

A 0.8 mile round trip to a view from a rock ledge. You will need to park  at the Crescent Rock Overlook. This trail will begin at the north end of the sidewalk and ascend gently. Retrace your steps to complete this 3/4 hour walk.


Cedar Run Falls

This is a very difficult hike because of its rocky and steep areas.  It is recommended for experienced hikers only. Now with that said, you will start this hike at the Hawksbill Gap Parking Area at mile 45.6. 


Hawksbill

Mile 46.7

2 hour

A 2.1 mile round trip to a 360-degree viewpoint and the highest peak in the Park. Parking will be at the Upper Hawksbill area on the west side. You will be hiking up the trail until you reach a dirt road. Turn right onto the road until you reach the top. When you are at the top, be sure to check out the falcons that are living there. Retrace your steps to complete this 2 hour hike. 


Dark Hollow Falls

1-1/2 hour

Note: this trail is one of the most heavily used trails in the park. 

A 1.4 mile round trip to a waterfall. You will be parking in the Dark Hollow Falls parking area and will follow the trail 0.6 mile to the head of the falls. You can continue on to the botton of the falls for good view all along the way. Retrace your steps to complete this 1-1/2 hour hike. No pets are allowed on this trail.  


Story of the Forest Nature Trail

Mile 51

1-3/4 hour

This is a 1.8 mile, circuit on a self guided natur;e trail which explains about the succession from meadow to forest. You will be parking in the Harrry F. Byrd Vistor Center parking lot. This trail will begin at the north end of the parking lot and end at the visitor center. No pets are allowed on this trail.
