Possibly the son of Francis Hardyman (1718) of Charles City Co., and Mary ___? From there to Francis Hardyman (1688) and Mary Sarah Taylor dau of Capt. John Taylor. Then to Lt. Col. John Hardyman (1645 Bristol, Eng.) and Mary Eppes dau of Francis Eppes and Elizabeth Worsham Littleberry (Henrico Co). Do not have any record tying John Hardiman to Francis Hardiman just circumstancial evidence. This is the line of inquiry at this time. (5 June 2000).

Lois - I have wrestled with this question of who John's father was,
especially since there are a number of reseachers of this family who claim
that John's father was another John Hardiman, the son of Francis I and Sarah
Taylor Hardiman. My only consolation that I am correct in saying John is
the son of Francis II comes from a few notes and documents that I have, that
don't totally prove anything. Following, I am pasting on a copy of a Will
of Francis II, where it can be found and how it got there, here goes:

The following is a copy of the material on pages 299-300 and 313-314 of the
court records of Charles City County, Virginia, in the years 1762, 1763 and
1764. These two sheets came into the possession of Western Reserve
Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio, by whom they have now been returned to
the Virginia State Library, Division of Archives and History, at Richmond.
One of the sheets carris the following note: "This sheet was picked up by
John H. Jack 1st Sergeant of Comp. E, 8th Ohio Reg in Charles City
Court-house yard as the regt. passed said court house on the grand
withdrawal of McClelland's army from before Richmond on the 16th or 17th day
of Aug, 1862.

In the name of God amen I Fancis Hardyman of Charles City County (being?)
sick and weak do make this my last will in manner as followeth (vis) my
desire is that all my land be equally divided between my four sons, William,
Francis, John & James and the Residue of my Estate I desire may be equally
divided between my four sons and two daughters (viz) William, Francis, John
& James & Sarah & Lucy and lastly I do appoint Littlebury Hardyman ex'or of
this my last will In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal
this 8th day of Aug 1763.

At a court held for Charles City County Wednesday, the 5th day of October
1763 The Last Will and Testament of Francis Hardyman, deced was presented in
court by John Hardyman which was proved by oath of Littlebury Hardyman &
Thomas Charles, two of the witnesses thereto is order to be recorded the
said Littlebury Hardyman ex'or named in the said will Refused to take upon
himself the execution thereof and it appearing to the court that Mary
Hardyman widow & relict of the (said) Francis Hardyman relinquishes her
right of administration on the motion of the said John Hardyman who made
oath thereto Certificate is granted him for obtaining Adm(tion?) with the
said Will annexed to due form he giving security whereupon he together with
Littlebury Hardyman hos security entered into & acknowledged their Bond with
the penalty of Two thousand pounds curr. money with such condition as the
Law Directs

Also, Lois,
I don't know if you know Linda Hardiman Smith of Harvest, Alabama, who also
is a descendant of Uriah Hardiman, son of John of Buckingham. But in her
answer to my question regarding the father of John Hardiman b 1738, she
replied on January 31, 2001, Quote
"Gene - in checking my records I show that John Hardyman( Hardiman) son of
Francis I and brother of
Francis II married Elizabeth Ann Stith. He did have a son named John who
married Hannah Harrison in Surry Co., Va. This John was born ca 1745 and
supposedly died "without issue". The following is from a book entiteld
"Virginia State Troops, State Line" p 549.
Quote "John Hardyman, Lieut. 2 Va. State Regt. comm. Sept 24, 1779, Feb 12,
1783, a warrant was issued by the State of Va. for 2,666 acres of land. He
md Miss Hannah Harrison, and d in 1808. in Elizabeth Co., Va. without issue.
He had a bro. Stith Hardyman, who d leaving a son Tyler Hardyman and the
latter d in Ala. leaving children. He (John) also had a sister, who m
Peter Eppes and the children of this marriage were the only heirs of John
Hardyman in 1856"

There is one other tidbit from my fuzzy memory that I have searched through
my boxes during this past year after the copy of Francis Hardiman II's Will
came to me. It would identify Francis's Dtr. Lucy as very likely being a
sibling of John (b 1738)-
It is a statement of a land transaction where John Hardiman of Buckingham (b
1738) deeded some land of Bedford Co. to several people including his
sister, Lucy
That note is here somewhere - I'll find it, I hope.
