Andrew Christopherson and Hedvig Rasmussen

Andrew Christopherson and Hedvig Rasmussen

Andrew Christopherson was born March 28, 1846 to Christopher Jorgensen and Anna Williamsen in Norre (northern), Mern, Sjaellands, Denmark. Mern is a small village at the southern tip of Sjaellands, one of the islands that makes up Denmark. He immigrated to the United States about 1874.

Andrew had 3 sisters and 4 brothers. They all remained in Denmark except for one brother, Hans, who immigrated to the United States. At the time of Andrew's death in 1913, Hans lived in Michigan. There is no other information regarding Andrew's siblings.

Hedvig Rasmussen was born September 9, 1860 to Rasmus (Hans Rasmussen) Nelsen and Karen (Caroline) Andersen in Langland, Denmark. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1883.

Andrew Christopherson and Hedvig Rasmussen were married on October 3, 1884 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

In 1889 they came to Dakota Territory (South Dakota) and settled in Clay County. They lived on a farm near Dalesburg for eight years, then on a farm near Lodi (Pleasant Valley Township) for four years and then they lived on a farm north of Vermillion (Spirit Mound Township) until 1912 when they moved to Vermillion.

Andrew and Hedvig had 12 children:

Andrew Christopherson died January 24, 1913. His obituary:

Anders Christopherson

Another Clay County citizen answered the final summons last Friday, when A. Christopherson died in a Sioux City hospital following an operation for bladder trouble. He had been ailing for some time and it was the decision of his physician that possibly life would be prolonged if an operation were performed. But the relief was not forthcoming. The family had lived in Vermillion about a year, residing in the home just north of the S.E. Brookman residence on Center Street. The remains arrived in Vermillion on Saturday morning last.

Anders Christopherson was born March 28, 1846 in Norre Mern, Sjelland, Denmark. He emigrated to American about 1874. In 1884 he was married to Caroline Hedvig Rasmussen, in Oshkosh, Wis. To this union were born four daughters and eight sons, all of whom survive the father: Anna Julia, now Mrs. J.F. Anderson, Robert P., Carrie P., now Mrs. George S. McDonald, Hans, Fredrick, Richard, Victor M., Waldemar G., Arnold, Asmine, Alvira Sophie and Tollef.

In the spring of 1889 the family came west to Dakota. Here they lived on one farm for eight years, at Lodi four years, and on the home place north of town for eleven years. Wishing to retire from the farm they bought a home on Cottage Avenue, Vermillion and moved to the city last March.

Besides the wife and twelve children, Mr. Christopherson left at his death one brother, Hans, who lives in Michigan.

As a reward of his industry and good planning, Mr. Christopherson prospered in a financial way.

Last Thursday Mr. Christopherson went to Sioux City for an operation, which took place on Friday, from the effects of which he died.

The funeral was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sunday afternoon. The pastor, Rev. Olaf Lysnes, spoke first in the Norwegian language on a few verses from the eighth chapter of Luke, then in English on Joel 2:13. Both the main assembly room and the League room of the church were filled by the audience of acquaintances and friends, who came to pay the last tribute of respect, and show their sympathy with the bereaved relatives. The body bearers were L.J. Lawrenson, Jens Peterson, Ole Peterson, Christian Hansen, Carl Nielsen and J.N. Stephensen. Internment was in Bluff View cemetery.
