WELCOME TO THE eCONTENT PROGRAMME

The eContent programme is aimed at supporting the production, dissemination and use of European digital content and to promote linguistic diversity on the global networks.

The eContent programme is based on three main strands of action where EU added value can be maximised:

  1. Improving access to and expanding use of public sector information
  2. Enhancing content production in a multilingual and multicultural environment
  3. Increasing dynamism of the digital content market

EUROPEAN DIGITAL CONTENT TOWARDS YEAR 2005

The eContent programme was adopted by the Council on the 22 December 2000.

  • for a period covering the years 2001 to 2005,
  • with a budget of 100 MEURO.

In particular, the eContent programme, as part of the eEurope Action Plan, contributes to its third objective:

"stimulate the use of internet"

The eContent programme builds on

  • The Commission proposal for a "Multiannual Community programme to stimulate the development and use of European digital content on the global networks and to promote the linguistic diversity in the information society", adopted on 24 May 2000.
  • The strategic eContent Preparatory Actions (Call of 20 April 2000) that were started for the year 2000.
  • The successful INFO 2000 and MLIS programmes that came to an end in 1999 (see the impact study and final evaluations).

The Commission adopted on the 15 March 2001:

  • The eContent Work Programme for the years 2001 - 2002
  • The 1st Call for proposals for the eContent programme
    • Part 1: Demonstration projects - fixed deadline: 15 June 2001
    • Part 2: Definition phase projects and Accompanying measures - continuous submission scheme up to 16 December 2002
