The Inception

At the request of seven Master Masons, W.Bro. Humphrey Alexander Minchin, Past Master of Lodge Pandyan; Bro. R. Rungarao; Bro. E.C. Mitchell; Bro. P. Subramonia Iyer; Bro.M. La' Bouchardiere; Bro. R. Rajarama Rao and Bro. R. Ananda Rao, (Charter Applicants) and with the support of Lodge Pandyan No. 2356 EC of Madurai, a Provisional  Warrant was issued by R. W. the District Grand Master of Madras, on 20th October 1897.

Accordingly, the Lodge Minchin was formed and its first meting was held on the 6th November 1897. The founders of the Lodge were occupying high and influential positions in life in the princely state of Travancore. W. Bro. Minchin was a member of Lodge Faith, Hope and Charity No. 1285 EC, Ootacamund.  He later joined Lodge Pandyan, Madurai and became its Master in 1894. He occupied the eastern chair in Lodge Minchin twice 1897 and 1909, and continued to be a pillar of strength to the Lodge until his death.  He died in 1913, while in active service in the state and his worldly remains were interred in a tomb situate at the head of Pechipara Dam, south of Thiruvananthapuram, over the construction of which he was the chief architect.

Of the other six, one was an assistant engineer, two were leading lawyers, one a Professor in Maharaja's College, Trivandrum and the remaining two leading construction contractors.

A formal petition for the GL Warrant was signed at the first meeting, in response to which the Grand Lodge of England issued the regular Warrant in June 1898 and the Lodge was assigned the number 2710. The first byelaws of the Lodge were framed at the consecration meeting and approved by the Grand Lodge in May 1898. These byelaws provided that the meetings of the Lodge be held on the first Saturday of every month. This provision has remained unaltered to this date.

The first person to be initiated in the Lodge was His Royal Highness Prince Marthanda Varma, Prince of Travancore. He was initiated in December 1897. But in October 1900 occurred his sudden and unexpected death, the second brother the Lodge lost, the first one being his co-initiate Bro. Regunatha Rao, father of the two founders Bro. R. Runga Rao (SW) and Bro. R. Ananda Rao (IG). He was 56 when initiated and died a year later.

The third initiate of that day was Bro. I.H. Prince, the father in law of another  founder member, Bro. M. La'Bouchardiere. Thefourth initiate was Bro. A. Krishna Rao, the first Tyler of the Lodge.

The first installation meeting in December 1898 was held in the presence of two Past Masters only as there was no possibility of obtaining a Past Master from a neighbouring Lodge. The same situation occurred again in 1910 and 1913.

A Chaplain was appointed for the first time in 1901, but was discontinued soon and was resumed some thirty years later.

In the early years as many as five candidates were initiated on the same evening and an equal number used to be passed or raised on other days.

Until March 1914 one black ball in the ballot would have disqualified a candidate for membership. The byelaws was then amended substituting three black balls for one

From March 1920 the date of installation was shifted from December to March.

The Silver Jubilee of the Lodge was celebrated on 4th November 1922 and the Golden Jubilee in 1947.

The year 1947 was, beside being the year of our independence,  memorable, as the first Indian District Grand Master, R.W. Bro. T.V. Muthukrishna Aiyer, was installed in the District Grand Lodge of Madras. The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in December 1957. In this year the Lodge contributed Rs. 5,000 for a Pay-ward by name "Freemason's Ward"at the Medical College Hospital, Trivandrum. Till now, this ward is available for use by members and their families, on a priority basis, and to the general public when not required by brethren. The amount was kept in a fixed deposit as an endowment, the proceeds of which used for providing artificial limbs and other appliances to the poor and needy. Later, owing to the inadequate returns coming from the endowment, Government decided to close the endowment account  In 2001. the Lodge obtained similar rights to a room in the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum at a cost of Rs.1.50 lakhs.  Allotment of the room to the Brethren, for both the facilities, is being exercised by the Master of Lodge Minchin.

The Platinum Jubilee was celebrated on 10th November 1972., and the Centenary on  7 November 1997.                                                                                                                  TOP

Comments by Web Master : From data given above it appears that W. Bro. Minchin became a mason immediately after he was 21, a Master at 27 and a Founder in his own name and right at 29 ! and died at 45.  Incredibly fantastic!!

The Minchin ancestors went from England to Ireland, probably as Adventurers, looking for land as a reward. It is believed that they originally came from Gloucestershire where there is a village called Minchinhampton and the Minchin Family formerly owned land in Glos. around the time of Elizabeth I. Of the three brothers, John, William and another (possibly named Daniel), Contrary to information in Burke's Irish Family Records, this John married Elizabeth Paulet, and they had seven children of which the eldest son Charles married Mary daughter of Charles of Croagh, Co Limerick, Ireland by his wife Elizabeth Games. Mary was sister of Col Thomas Walcot, who was executed for his part
in the Rye House plot 20 July 1683. Their youngest son Edward (born about 1668) of Glenahilty, Co Tipperary, married Anne and had eight children.

Their son Charles (born ca 1714) of Woodville and Ballygibbon, Co Tipperary, married Elizabeth in 1740, she being the daughter of William Massey and Anne Bentley. Their youngest son, Humphrey Charles Minchin (1750-1830) of Dublin, married in 1775, Frances Catherine, daughter of Joseph Sirr and Elizabeth Hall and sister of Henry Charles Sirr, Chief of Police in Dublin during the rebellion of 1798.

Among others, Humphrey Charles Minchin and Catherine had a daughter Louisa Arabella Minchin (born ca 1794, died 1882) who married Walter of Taney
House, Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland. Of their seven sons and four daughters, the youngest daughter, Julia Adelaide Bourne (1840-1932) married Mark Anthony (1844-1901), son of Mark Toomey and Jane  Their Daughter Jane Toomey married George.

FOUNDATION LAYING CEREMONY SEPTEMBER 7, 1979

After the District Grand Master was received in the 3 in open Lodge WM explained the purpose of constructing a new temple and expressed the desire that the District Grand Master should lay the Foundation Stone. The District Grand Master consented to the request and retired to the proposed site on the eastern side of the existing temple. The D of C of the Lodge Minchin then led the WM and his officers and other brethren in procession to the site and placed them in appropriate places. The Lodge was then close tyledwith the tyler remaining at his post. after the flourish of trumpets and the invocation chorus led by W.Bro. J.C. Alexander at the organ, the ceremony was proceeded with according to ancient rites and customs. After the District Grand Master's address, the District Grand Secretary read the inscription on the plate and the stone was lowered by 9 (22.5 cm) inches with the choir accompanying in solo and in chorus. The District Grand Treasurer deposited the vessel containing coins, parchments etc. in the cavity and the plate was then cemented in its place. The stone was again lowered by 9 inches. The DJGW proved the stone perfect and trustworthy, the DSGW proved it level and well founded, and the Dy.D.G.M. proved it well wrought and true. Having found that the craftsmen have laboured skillfully the DGM gave knocks with the mallet. There was further flourish of trumpets and the choir followed. The D.G. Supt. of Works presented the plans of the building to the DGM. The DGM strew corn and poured wine and oil upon the stone with appropriate blessings. Money for the workmen was placed on the stone by the DG Treasurer. After further benediction the DGM and officers retired from the site in procession. The WM, officers and other brethren retired to the Lodge and the Lodge was closed in due and ancient form.

Membership of the Lodge

From its inception in 1897 to the end of December 2004, 543 members had joined the Lodge either as Initiates or as Joining members, of whom 26 members left the Lodge only to rejoin later. As of January 1, 2005 the membership stood at 106.

Membership grew from 7 at the first meeting in 1897 to 46 in a decade to 1907, but fell to 29 in the following decade in 1917, with only 10 resident members, most of whom were irregular in attendance so much so that no valid meeting could be held for several months. In fact, steps were also taken to erase the lodge.

However,  membership rose phenomenally from 1919 onwards and it touched 165 in November 1980 and the Lodge was forced to stop further recruitment, putting the ceiling at 160. Many brethren who had earlier left the Lodge rejoined in 1919. One hundred members of the lodge attended the District Grand Lodge Meeting held at Trivandrum in September 1979, a record in the history of the District Grand Lodge for the number of members from any single lodge attending. With 165 members the Lodge was the singularly largest in the District, and the premier status continues to be so even today with 106 members.

 The Temple

The meetings of the Lodge were being held in a rented building near Napier Park (Trivandrum Museum Public Gardens) since the beginning. In 1903 the Maharaja of TRavncore gifted a piece of land measuring 1.56 acres and donated a sum of Rs. 1,000 towards construction cost. The temple was completed in 1905, at a cost of Rs. 25,000 and was consecrated in 1907 by W. Bro. A.Y.G. Campbell. The lodge had incurred a debt of Rs. 17,000 and all efforts to raise the required funds to liquidate the liability were unsuccessful. Ultimately the Government of Travancore came forward to buy the building at Rs. 20,000. The deal was closed in July 1911. The meetings were again shifted to the rented building at the Napier's. It was not until 1925, when the Government of Travancore once again extended its patronage by providing land for the construction of the second temple, which continues to serve the lodges, Chapters and the Conclave in Trivandrum. The new temple cost Rs.10,000. It was consecrated on February 5, 1927 by W. Bro. Rev. A. Gardiner P.D.G.W, when the Lodge was under the Mastership of W.Bro. A.C.A. Thackwell. An annexe was also constructed for the brethren to rest on the meeting days.

In 1951 the boundary between the Lodge and the Sree Moolam Club was secured by a wall.

A new temple was planned, in 1979, to be constructed in the newly acquired piece of land. The foundation stone was laid by the District Grand Master Rt. Wor. Bro.Lt. Col. G.S. Gill. However, this project did not materialize as expected. Instead a community hall was constructed later in 1985.  The minutes of the Lodge bear an elaborate record of the ceremony of the foundation laying. It is reproduced here for the sake of information of those who were not present at the function
