HISTORY OF LODGE MINCHIN

The District of Madras

Our District
Indian History reveals that the 17th century Europeans believed that India was East Indies. May be that is why they thought that Madras (now Chennai) was in East Indies. Anyway, the first known lodge in this part of the world was styled 'Lodge Madras in East Indies' for which a warrant was issued in 1752.This lodge survived for about 4 decades when it was erased in 1790. Lodges No. 1, Madras, No.2, Madras and No.3, Trichinopaly were consecrated in 1765 but were erased in 1791. The Lodges in the then  Province of Madras were recognized as a Masonic Province and in 1767 Captain Edmund Pascal was appointed Provincial Grand Master.

Ten  Provincial Grand Masters ruled the Province, over a period of a complete century, after him.  In 1856 Col. Wm. Pitt Macdonald was appointed the Provincial Grand Master. He was redesignated District Grand Master when the Province was re-styled District of Madras in 1866 and became its first District Grand Master. There had been 16 District Grand Masters during the past 138 years. The first District Grand Master of Indian descend was the Right Worshipful Bro. Tiruchendurai Venkataraman Muthukrishna Aiyer, BA, BL.(1946 - 1967), while the first District Grand Master of  royal descend was Rt. W. Bro. A.P. Tampi from the royal family of Travancore, and a member of Lodge Minchin. (1981-2000).

Together with the period as a Province organized Masory had been in existence in this part of India for over 250 years. 77 lodges were warranted during this period, of which 37 survived when, in 1961, the Grand Lodge of India was formed. Out of these 37, nineteen lodges joined the Grand Lodge of India and the remaining 18 stayed back with UGLE.

The District celebrated its 225th anniversary in 1992 when the Grand Lodge celebrated its 275th anniversary, the same year. Our District is just 50 years younger to the UGLE
