| Dinner with the President | ||||||||
| The day started so well...I actually woke up and made it to all of my classes, Anna and I went to the gym (a miracle I know...), and we had dinner with the University president later. But when we were getting ready for it, the whole thing fell apart. We planned to walk to the bus stop as a group at 5:30 as a group to get a ride to the University Center to meet our bus to President Zaccari's house, but of course I had to change 3 times from what I initially planned to wear (don't make fun...it's been a somewhat effective method for years...) so we didn't really make it there until about 5:32, but seriously, when the buses are supposed to be around every 15 minutes, thats still loads of time to get to the UC by 5:45 (okay, our teachers know us...there's no way the buses were really scheduled to leave exactly on time) right?? Except when you are with me and have the curse of the Irish upon you...I swear, I should have expected this trauma, it wouldn't be my life otherwise. The green bus didn't arrive to take us over to the UC until five until 6 (and yes all you smart asses, we could have just walked there faster, but oh wait, we are in the midst of Valdosta's monsoon season and without a small yacht, we weren't going to make it.) and when we got to the UC, there was no sign of the bus or our class. Being the responsible Emerging Leaders we are, we had called my roommate while waiting for the first bus and told her we were delayed, and then when we couldn't find any sign of people at the UC, we continued to call every other Emerging Leader in my cell (why must yall turn off your phones?) but the only one I could actually get a hold of was Erin...yes the infamous ex-roommate Erin. My luck right? Surprisingly, she was oh so nice to us, and when she got to President Zaccari's house, she had the coordinator call my cell and give me directions. We weren't going to miss this experience after all, Lizzy could drive us! Now we just had to get to her car...in Oak Street lot...in the rain...Well, first we got the notion to wait for the bus, but oh wait, didn't that let us down horribly already? Yeah, we are smart...so after about 10 more minutes waiting, we venture off to find her car by walking. Okay Lizzy and Katie, when the little white man is flashing at you, it means cross the street..especially when we are on a time crunch and the light is perpetually green on your side of the street...But eventually we get to Patterson Street and think we are home free...until Lizzy hydroplanes...twice. I thought I had gotten into the car with Jordan by mistake! We finally reached the Zaccari's mansion and apologized profusely to everyone, but they didn't seem to mind us being "fashionably late"...guess we do it well. The whole event was pretty cool though. We got to ask President Zaccari all sorts of questions (I was so tempted to comment on the poor bus scheduling...) and I made friends with his wife and dog. And then I made up for everything on the ride home, because for almost every event where I envoke trouble, I seem to find another opportunity for us to be serenaded! Red hat David (yes, that is his given name...) bummed a ride from us and as payment we recieved "Your Body is a Wonderland." Even though it all turned out good, everyone has promised never to go to important event with me again...too many incidentals in my life... |
