Fic: A Guide to M/M PG13

The Trianne Guide to Writing Successful Male on Male Slash

-being a simple little examination of the problems faced by writers of same sex slash.

Warning: Politically Incorrect and only mildly amusing

Rating: PG-13 for sexual references to intimate male body parts

Disclaimer: I do not know any of these same sex real life people but if I did I would insist they march on Washington and Downing Street in support of something worthwhile, then back to my place for intellectual debate and a whipped cream bath

AN: Just a series of fluffy little observations gleaned whilst reading red hot m/m slash for several wonderful weeks; and writing my own fics, I sort of wondered how to get round the obvious difficulties... Kudos to the writers, is all I can say!!

Feedback: Why not?

The gender problem:-

He holds him in his arms and his hands seek out his warm embrace, arms entwine him lovingly, hungrily, in desperation. His cock bangs against his cock, his hands finding the chest that he has dreamed of, whilst all the time he is mouthing into his ear….

Well, in het fiction, you have

He
She
His
Hers

not to mention rather different body parts. Simple — if boring!

In slash, he/he/his/his/cock/cock/bum/bum

Ways around this dilemma may include mentioning species every other sentence, i.e.

a)  The Elf
b)  The Dwarf
c)  The Hobbit
d)  The Wizard
e)  The Ranger
f)  The King in Waiting
g)  The Breelander
h)  The Man of Gondor
i)  The Man of the Mark
j)  The Dunedain
k)  The Uruk-Hai
l)  The Orc
m)  The Balrog
n)  The Ent
o)  The Pony

Similarly, perhaps, when the action is hotting up and the limbs of the protagonists are getting harder to sort out, this rough guide may assist, - though please feel free to mix and match:

a)  The older man's (Erection/hard-on….)
b)  The younger man's (cock/dick…)
c)  The blond's (excitement/John Thomas)
d)  The brunette's (shaft/staff of power…)
e)  The bigger man's (gloat)
f)  The smaller man's (inadequacy)
g)  The experienced man's (low boredom threshold)
h)  The inexperienced man's (anal retention)

Or, why not go by nationalities or types, and don't be afraid of stereotyping, just go for it!

i) The Brit (easily identified due to his propensity to wear several layers of woolly clothing and his total bewilderment, when arriving in America, at finding hot and cold running water in the same apartment)

j) The American (wears Aviator shades, lives in palatial mansion in LA, has never seen rain, and drives a motor the size of a small school gym)

k) The Aussie (beer swilling, outdoors type, usually blond and fit and unable to go 10 yards without reapplying baby oil to spectacular pecs of sex)

m) The Scot (comic relief)

n) The German born of British parents Brit (prone to disappearing on the trail of post office pension book fraudsters and has an unhealthy obsession with elderly ladies with large handbags and dodgy hats)

o) The photographer/artist (mean, moody and magnificent, will entice the inexperienced victim up to his studio to view his etchings and will be most annoyed if said inexperienced victim expects rampant sex and does not actually want to see, analyse and appreciate said etchings...)

p) The Gondorian football fanatic (the terraces call, the Reds are waiting, he's having a ball, forget the man-dating)

q) The ex-child star (all hail the mighty EW, though could conceivably be Sean A, but naw! Its Lije)

r) The Knight of the Theatre (Bow low for Richard III, Iago, Malvolio and, er, Magneto)

s) The mysterious, gorgeous one (The one no-one in Europe has ever heard of but will probably bust a gut over when Two Towers is released)

t) The one who looks good in drag (you know who it is)

u) The one who was in Indiana Jones (he doesn't feature in many fics, so can safely be left to slumber in a holodeck on Voyager where he thinks, ha ha, he is Leonardo Da Vinci)

Here ends Trianne's Guide. Please feel free to append any further guidance, help or advice, heaven knows we need it.
