My Grandmother was Lucile McElhaney Frogge. As the name suggests, she was Irish. Lucile was born in 1913, in Goldsby, to Benjamin Franklin McElhaney and Retta Adaline Andrews. She married Ray Byron Frogge August 17, 1934, in Norman, OK. She was a homemaker and loved her home and gardening. A longtime resident of Norman, she enjoyed many friends, including the Norcas Sunday School class and the New Hope Family Community Education Organization. she was a member of First Baptist church of Norman, and a charter member of the Woodlawn Garden Club.
Lucile and Ray were married for 55 years when Ray died June 1990. I spent many summers with my grandparents in Oklahoma and when they would visit us in West Virginia. My grandmother was a very loving woman and she loved to show her affection toward family and friends. I have so many fond memories of hot summers in Oklahoma and Texas. Grandma and Grandpa Frogge would drive all the way to West Virginia from Norman, OK in a VW Rabbit . My brother Tom would often go back with them to Oklahoma to spend the summer fishing with Grandpa. Grandma would spend her summers gardening and canning home grown vegetables.
After Grandpa died, Grandma would come to Houston, TX to spend a few months with my mother, Mar Sue, and my Aunt Shirley. Since I was living in Houston at the time, I also got to visit with her. I remember one specific time when she came to visit and I took her our for ice cream. I believe that may have been the first time I had spent time alone with my Grandmother since I had become an adult. It was so nice to just sit and talk with her. I will forever cherish that day.
She was diagnosed with colon cancer around Easter 1997. It quickly raged through her body and finally took her from us right before Mothers Day of the same year. My mother and Shirley were with her when she passed. It was hard on the family to loose Grandmother, but we knew that she went to a better place and that she was with God and Grandpa.
