MISSION STATEMENT
he LMRC, founded in the wake
of the WTC tragedy, is the people of Lower Manhattan organizing
and mobilizing to create a strong, united
and permanent voice that will fight for the community's
needs.
Our goal in the short and
long term are to:
- Continue to facilitate relief efforts
to our neighborhoods.
- Ensure all residents of
Lower Manhattan participate in and benefit from the
rebuilding effort.
- Fight the displacement of residents
and the businesses and institutions that serve our community.
- Create institutional change in
the way government and business serve the working class
residents of Lowr Manhattan.
- Build up a community that is economically,
environmentally and culturally stronger, healthier and
more unified after September 11!
The World Trade Center
fell in our backyard.
THE LOWER MANHATTAN
RESIDENTS RELIEF COALITION (LMRRC) IS LEADING THE RESCUE
EFFORT TO ENSURE THAT THEIR NEIGHBORS GET THE HELP THEY
NEED.
Local leaders, Kwong
T. Hui, Norma Ramirez and Shirley S. Kwan, have rallied
volunteers to preserve a sense of community in the face
of tragedy.
While the focus of our
City's relief effort has been on "Ground Zero,"
thousands of New Yorkers who live only blocks away are
in desperate need of help. Seniors, disabled people, and
families, all living in the dust of the Trade Center,
often have no outlet for their emotional pain, and no
one to contact if they need help. Since the attack, residents
have lived without electricity, phone service, or human
contact. Fortunately, vocal members of the community and
nationwide are volunteering their time to help other victims
of this tragedy.
Since the attack, coalition
volunteers have been going door to door checking on the
people in the community. Volunteers are building a list
of needed resources, and addressing questions and concerns
of residents. Most importantly, they are drawing the community
out of seclusion and providing people with the human contact
they need.
With volunteers are being
turned away at other relief centers, LMRRC is seeking
volunteers to join in this grassroots effort.
