Aefvadh to the RSR LibraryGames: 3d and 4d chess
There's alot of sites out there now with the rules of 3D chess and how to build a board for it (if you do a search on google or something similar, you'll find them). So I won't go into explaining the rules and whatnot. But I will provide you with a few links for your pursual.

Parmen Chess. This is a downloadable version of 3D chess for your computer. It also has links to the rules, available in several languages -including Romulan, it says!

3D chess from Star Trek. Also has instructions on constructing your own board!

4D chess (or hyperchess) is a game that takes it one step further. According to a Star Trek book (the title of which escapes me just now) in 4D chess the pieces phase onto the playing board where and when you least suspect them. Similar to laying in wait to ambush your opponate. I haven't found a rule book yet that explains how you can do this with a regular 3D board. If you know of any, please email me here, and I'll see about adding a link to it.

However, I did find a place that offeres 4D chess for your computer. I haven't tried to download it yet myself, but will likely soon sometime in the future. There's also another variant of a 4D chess computer program under the name of Chesseract
