Miniature Pinscher Basic Facts and Information

The Miniature Pinscher, where did they come from??
It is believed that they evolved from the ancient German Pinscher family of dogs, which ultimately produced a number of the breeds recognized by AKC today.
In 1836, a German writer, Dr. H. Reinchenbach, stated the Miniature Pinscher is a cross of a Dachshund and the Italian Greyhound. This conclusion is now accepted by historians.

Are they bred down from a Doberman Pinscher??
Absolutely not! In fact, the Miniature Pinscher is the older of the two breeds.

Is there a Miniature Pinscher Club?? Yes! You can find the link on my favorite links page.

What should their looks be like for a pure breed?? The miniture pinscher is a well balanced, sturdy, compact, short-coupled, smooth coated dog. They are naturally well groomed, proud, vigorous, and alert. Characteristic traits are their hackney-like action, fearless animation, complete self-possession, and their spirited presence. Their height should range between 10 inches and 12 1/2 inches, measured at highest point of the shoulder blade.

How do they act?? The Miniature Pinscher is known as a "Character."
This is how they earned the name "King Of Toys." The Min Pin is fearless, animated, intensely curious, and always full of vim and vinegar. Because of their high energy levels, they bear close watching. It's just like having a toddler around the house, you can't take your eye off them one minute. They have also been known to be "escape artists."
They will run right out the door, when it is opened. They are also very protective. They are very playful, if you have two or more, they make a good tv show.

Are they good with kids?? Yes and no! If they are raised around children who treat them in a good way, then you won't have any problems. However, if the child is allowed to grab at them or treat them roughly, they will run from children and might show defense.

Are they good obedience dogs?? Yes! With a persistant trainer, whether it be yourself or a professional trainer, these dogs can learn anything. It doesn't take them long to learn, either.

How do I take care of them?? Grooming is very minimal, because of their short coat. They do tend to get cold quite often, though. During winter time, they must wear coats outside and sometimes in. That's why it is known for Min Pins to cuddle alot and sleep underneath blankets.
Trimming of their nails need to be done about evry two weeks. Frequent bathing is discouraged because it tends to dry out the coat. Use a damp cloth to wash them up. Never send your Min Pin outside while their coat is wet. They are cold-blooded dogs. A Min Pins nature is to investigate everything. Be sure to keep small objects put up to avoid choking hazards. For outside, put up a fence. Make sure there are no small openings for your Min Pin to escape.

What do they eat?? These dogs do not eat much. They can have dry or canned dog food. It is recommended not to give them alot of the canned food.
