Full details about the concerts (Spoilers!) (19/07/08)

Aqua's comeback is now a reality and they have already performed two concerts at Esbjerg and Herning (Denmark) during the Grøn Koncert festival. Their performances have received mixed reviews, from 3 out of 6 starts (Ekstra Bladet, Gaffa and JP) to 5 out of 6 starts (BT). Whatever the critics say, the internet is full of comments of the attendees to the concerts, praising Aqua's performance and calling it the highlight of the event. If you can't wait for your concert to arrive, if you have already seen Aqua live but you want to remember it or if, unfortunately, you can't assist to any of the concerts, don't worry. I've gathered all the information, pictures and videos available to write this report of Aqua's comeback.

It's 18:10. Before Aqua appears, the host of Grøn Koncert introduces them. While the musicians that are accompanying Aqua in these concerts take their positions, an unreleased song serves as the intro for the concert. Pictures of the band appear on screen, and soon they're followed by the new Aqua logo. Then finally Claus, Lene, René and Søren appear on stage and Cartoon Heroes kicks off.

As you can see, Aqua wear circus-themed costumes. Claus, René and Søren keep the same clothes for the whole concert, while Lene wears up to four different dresses. The setlist of the concert is as follows:

  • Intro
  • Cartoon Heroes
  • My Oh My
  • Doctor Jones
  • Shakin' Stevens
  • Lollipop (Candyman)
  • Turn Back Time
  • Back To The 80's (Those Were The Days)
  • Freaky Friday
  • Good Morning Sunshine
  • Back From Mars
  • Aquarius
  • Happy Boys & Girls
  • Barbie Girl
  • We Belong To The Sea
  • Goodbye To The Circus (Interlude)

    Encore:

  • Around The World
  • Roses Are Red

The arrangements of the songs vary from pure pop to rock, while most of them make good use of modern electronica to enhance them and make them sound like today's music.

Cartoon Heroes, My Oh My, Doctor Jones and Shakin' Stevens.

Shakin' Stevens.

As you can see in the video above (thanks to Aquarama visitor Niklas for that!), Shakin' Stevens is a different version from 2001's recording, more electronic than rock. We can finally listen in a better quality the lyrics of the song, quite different than we previously thought! Lollipop (Candyman) mixes rock and electronic music with a great effect, most reviews coincide in saying that it was one of the best numbers of the concert.

For Turn Back Time, the platforms at both sides of the stage get down and Lene and Claus walk around them during the whole song while a countdown takes over the screens. Back To The 80's (popularly know as Those Were The Days) has already surfaced thanks to our great visitor Niklas. It is a totally new song, very upbeat, rockish and very Aqua. The lyrics are a tribute to the 80s, with mentions to many celebrities and shows from that era, like David Hasselhoff, Michael Jackson or Star Wars. It's not the same song as the Everybody Loves Somebody snippet on Aqua's MySpace. Enjoy it:

During the performance of Freaky Friday, René shows to the audience some magic tricks. He even saws Lene in two. But, of course, she recovers.

For Good Morning Sunshine, Lene changes her clothes into a weird ballerine thing and she seems to act as dumb. Later, she sings Back From Mars.

She sings Aquarius sitting on a swing, with Søren playing the piano close to her. And then it's turn for Happy Boys & Girls, with fun smileys representing the four Aqua members on the screens.

After this, Lene once again disappears from the stage. A reworked version of Barbie Girl starts, with René performing a long rap verse. Then, the members of the chorus sing a part of the song. Soon, Lene returns to the stage to perform this classic hit, and this time she's dressed as a sexy majorette.

Now it's time for introducing the band and musicians. They sing together, standing one next to each other, We Belong To The Sea. Then, it looks like it's time of saying goodbye: the band walks out of the stage and a video of Goodbye To The Circus is played on the screens, with Claus, Lene, René and Søren dressed as clowns. But it's not the end of the concert, as Aqua still has to perform Around The World and their very first hit in Denmark: Roses Are Red. For this last section of the concert, Lene dresses and looks like a weird punk, this must be the strangest wig she has ever worn.

Aqua says goodbye. The End. Or, as stated in the official Aqua T-Shirts on sale during the concerts: The adventure continues...
