My experience at the Aqua concert in Copenhagen (30/07/2008)

Back in 2001, I planned about going to one of the Aqua concerts during the Grøn Koncert of that year. I had already seen them one year before during a music festival of a Spanish radio station, but they only played two songs (Cartoon Heroes and Around The World) and they were playback, so I wanted a full live experience. However, I didn't have money for the travel to Denmark, so I had to discard the idea, ignoring that Aqua would split up shortly after those concerts. So, when they announced their comeback in 2007 and their participation the 2008's Grøn Koncert, I promised myself that this time I wouldn't miss the opportunity to see them live.

Thanks to two great Aqua fans (and Aquarama visitors), John and Lasse, I could manage to get special tickets for the Grøn Koncert in Copenhagen, which included access to the VIP area (Grøn Liga) and a visit to the backstage. The Copenhagen concert was the last one of the tour, so I tried to keep myself away from spoilers of the Aqua concerts, although I had to update Aquarama. I just watched Shakin' Stevens and Back To The 80's and some other short clips on YouTube, as well as read the details sent by many people who attended some of the concerts. Anyway, when my boyfriend and me took the plane to Copenhagen, I was ready to enjoy the concert as if I didn't know anything at all.

After two days of tourism around the beautiful Copenhagen, the 27th came by and a bus lead us to the VIP area at Valby Park, where the concert would take place 5 hours later. The Grøn Liga was a fenced zone near the main stage, where you could sit and have free drinks and meals, assisted by the kindest personnel of all. You could also walk into the main area of Valby Park, and so we did to buy some Aqua T-Shirts at the official merchandise stand (too bad that the sweatshirt with the new logo was soldout). The shop assistant was very kind and congratulate us for having came from Barcelona just for Aqua. He was wearing a Hej Matematik polo shirt, but it wasn't on sale! Then, we went around the crowded park, we snooped around every stand, we took part on the SingStar contest and then we went back to the Grøn Liga zone, where we finally got to meet John and Lasse. We spent the remaining hours talking about Aqua and burning under the implacable sun.

It was a matter of minutes until the Aqua concert started and I was nervous as hell. I changed my T-Shirt to an Aqua one. We learned that the backstage visit would be during 4 songs, but we had to wait for the second turn, as there were already too many people inside the backstage. So we rushed into the general area and managed to get a good position despite all the persons standing in front of the stage. The intro started and I was thrilled. The first three songs passed by so fast: Cartoon Heroes and the amazing new versions of My Oh My and Doctor Jones, very electronic and with great use of vocoders.

Too bad, we had to walk to the backstage access during the Shakin' Stevens performance, so we missed part of it. From the backstage, you didn't have the best point of view of Lene, René or the screens, but you could see the band and the crew very close, so it was worth it. Søren, Claus and René smiled at us from time to time. Some relatives of the Aqua members were also present there. We saw a paper with the official setlist, discovering that the new song is titled Back To The 80's, not Those Were The Days. After Lollipop (Candyman) (it rocked!), Turn Back Time (beautiful as always), Back To The 80's (amazing) and Freaky Friday (fun magic number, but from the side of the stage you could see part of the trick), it was time to rush to the general area again.

This time, we managed to get closer to the front of the stage, and as the concert advanced, we could get closer and closer to it. After Good Morning Sunshine, Lene reappeared with the black ballerina dress, which I liked better than in the pictures that I had seen. The disco version of Back From Mars was amazing, one of the highlights of the concert. Aquarius was so touching, it's such a beautiful song and Lene's voiced shined through it. Then, the crowd went wild jumping and singing to Happy Boys & Girls, while shaking their T-shirts under René's orders. Aqua were overwhelmed by the positive reaction of the audience.

After a rap by René, Lene came back to the stage with her bachellorette dress to sing Barbie Girl. The whole Valby Park was crazy singing to Aqua's most famous song. Everyone kept singing for We Belong To The Sea, which seemed to be the last song of the concert. But the musicians and members of the chorus returned on stage to perform Goodbye To The Circus, while Søren played it on his piano and a video of Aqua disguised as clowns was shown in the screens. Then, it was Around The World turn, with René and Lene (now in her weird punk outfit) enjoying every minute of it. The screens projected the unreleased alternate video of that song, with the members of the band in the funniest costumes, recreating TV programmes from all around the world. Most properly, the last song of the concert was Aqua's first hit in Denmark, Roses Are Red, which everyone jumped and sang to, surrounded by red petals made of paper flying all over us. Aqua thanked the audience for the great response and said goodbye... for the moment.

Once the concert had finished, it was time to head to Aqua's stand, as the band would be signing autographs to the patient fans. We had to wait for almost an hour, trying to survive to the pushes. I had forgotten to bring an Aqua CD for the signatures session, so I had to be content with the Aqua cottonbag that I had bought in the morning. It was hard to wait for my turn into the first row, everyone was pushing and trying to jump the queue. Finally, I could ask Claus to sign the cottonbag. Later, Lene came by and autographed the bag. I asked for a picture with her, to which she replied where I was coming from. When I told her that I had traveled from Barcelona with my boyfriend, she pronnounced the name of the city in perfect Spanish and she laughed and said that we were crazy, but she was happy knowing that people from other countries still cared for the band. Then, René approached and, before signing, he asked me about the concert and dedicated some spanish words to us. The last one to sign my cottonbag was Søren. I told him that I was the webmaster of Aquarama, and he was glad to meet me, as we had shared messages on Aqua's official MySpace. He thanked me for having traveled to Denmark. Later, he told to my boyfriend to wait, as we were having the chance to get into the backstage to take some private pictures with the band. It was funny to hear Søren and Lene talk about us and Aquarama.

I was in shock! We went to the area behind the stand, where we met and chatted to a nice Aqua fan, Lorissa, who had come from Canada. Our friends John (who came from Alaska) and Lasse were also invited to join. I was so nervous that I was all trembling and forgot most of my english. But anyway, we talked to Aqua for a while (they are so nice and open), took some pictures with them and then they thanked us for coming and said goodbye.

Aqua, Tidus & me Aqua

Once the D-A-D concert finished, the bus took us back to Copenhagen, where I spent another day doing tourism with my boyfriend before returning to Barcelona. Now I still have to assimilate that I was talking to Aqua! The travel was all worth it. I enjoyed an amazing concert and I had the chance to meet Aqua. I hope that what Lene whispered to my ear is true: 'I promise you that we are back'.
