On the witness stand, Marty had to relive that horrible night at the Spring Fling. |
Marty filed rape charges against Todd, Powell, Zachas well as Kevin too, who in her confusion, she wrongly believed was among the men who gang raped her! Only later did Marty realize that she was mistaken and recanted her allegation against Kevinwhich very much hurt her case in court. Todds father, Peter Manning, hired famed defense attorney Nora Gannon to represent his son and friends in court. Nora, fully believing in her clients innocence, prepared a very strong case in their defense.
The trial went very well for the defendants. After Noras brutal cross-examination of Marty, it looked as though Todd, Zach and Powell were going to be acquitted. However, when Nora discovered, to her horror, that Todd had raped another coed, Carol Swift, she realized he was guilty. What to do? After failing to get Judge Fitzwater to allow her to drop the case, Nora delivered an intense summation, during which she made it evident to all that her three clients were guilty as sin. Noras sudden turn against Todd, Zach and Powell resulted in a mistrial, and nearly got her disbarred.
Todd once again swore revenge on Marty. After Marty spoke out on Luna Moodys radio show about her experience, Todd waited for her in the alley outside the radio station. He pinned her against the wall and threatened to rape her again. Seeing this, Luna raced into the alley, grabbed a metal pipe and hit Todd across the face with it. The attack left him deaf in one ear, and his face scarred. When Peter visited Todd in the hospital, he called him a pathetic excuse for a son and abandoned him. Later, Marty confronted Todd in the hospital and provoked him into arrogantly confessing to raping her. Unbeknownst to Todd, Marty got his confession on tape! Todd would be sentenced to eight years in prison, which left him seething with anger.
