Viki was stuck in the between her long time love for Joe and her recent commitment to Steve. |
With Joes miraculous return from the dead, Viki now had two husbands! She admitted that she cared for both Joe and Steve, but since Steve was whom she most recently committed to, she felt her duty was to him. Still, the more she came into contact with Joe at The Banner, the stronger residual attraction to him became. Fate intervened when, while away on assignment together, Joe and Viki wound up making love. The next morning, after Viki reaffirmed to Joe that she still couldnt leave Steve, a bitter argument between them ensued, resulted in Viki fleeing in tears. While driving, Viki sped and wound up sliding into the path of a tree. The accident left Viki comatose for months.
Viki awoke with selective amnesia. Unable to remember the events of the past year and a half, she believed that she was still married to Joe. Upon being sent home to Llanfair to recuperate, her psychiatrist, Dr. Marcus Polk, ordered that no one update Viki of the more recent events leading up to her present day lifehoping that she would eventually recall them on her own. She did. Viki finally remembered being Steves wife, and Joes return from the dead. Upon her recovery, Viki again remained adamant that her obligation was to Stevenot Joe.
Showing a talent in journalism, young Cathy Craig was hired by The Banner and quickly fell hard for Steve. Unable to cope with her feelings for her married boss, Cathy eventually resigned from the newspaperopting to pour her energies into penning a novel. Joe, still painfully in love with Viki but hiding it, optioned the rights of Cathys manuscript. While spending more and more time working together, the two became physically attracted to each other and in time made love.
