One day, Carla paid a surprise visit to Anna Wolek, a friend she had met at Llanview Hospital. As she knocked at the door, Sadie Gray opened the door of her apartment from across the hall. Seeing only the back of Carlas head, Sadie cordially alerted the lady that Anna was away. As Carla turned around, both were stopped cold in their tracks, upon facing each other. There was a long, awkward moment of awareness, then recognition, followed by mutual shock. In a shocking twist, Carla Benari was revealed to be Clara Gray; daughter of Sadie.
Carla had left home as a teenager in pursuit of an acting career. She would discover though that acting roles were nearly impossible to obtain for a person of color. Using her fare complexion as a camouflage, Carla spent many years passing herself off as a white Italian woman, in spite of the fact that she was really a light skinned black woman. After coming face to face with her mother for the first time since her youth, Sadie sought to rebuild her relationship with Carla, while shaming her for having spent so much time and energy denying who she really was.
In the aftermath of her secret being exposed, Carla broke off her engagement with Jim and fell into a relationship with Price, whom she had really become passionate over. Price, however, was less than sympathetic when he learned of Carlas lying about who (and what) she was. As a proud black man, he angrily blasted her for the charade. Price and Carla eventually reconciled and forged ahead with their relationship. Their union, though, came to a screeching halt when Price was later offered and accepted a position that would send him away from Llanview, over to Scotland.
