The Berlin Wall Today
November 9, 1989, The Berlin Wall was done away with. It was a symbole of the Cold War and the seperation of East and West. Today only a few sections still are standing.
Basic Facts About the Beginging
The Berlin Wall, 1961-89, was erected in Aug.of 1961 by the East German government. It seporated East and West Berlin. It was later extended along the entire border seporating East Germany from West Germany. In the begining it was only a barbed wire fence but evenctually it was replaced by a cement wall.
Reasons for The Wall
The wall was built to stop people from crossing over from East Berlin to West Berlin. Many well educated people were moving out of East Berlin as fast as they could and that was hurting the economy. The West side was interfering with the East side. The East side was the Russian sector.
Ronald Regan
"General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberation: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!
Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
