| SmackDown! results 12/28/00 Chris Benoit then defended his Intercontinental Championship against Matt Hardy. Ultimately, Matt went for a tornado DDT from the top rope, but Benoit reversed it and locked on the crossface for the submission win. SmackDown! results 1/4/01 The first SmackDown! match of the new year was for the Intercontinental Championship, as Chris Benoit defended his title against Y2J himself, Chris Jericho! Prior to the match, Jericho promised to make the first SmackDown! match of the year a memorable one. Y2J said if it wasn't for Lt. Commissioner Debra giving him the title shot, he wouldn't be here, and if it wasn't for Old Lady Benoit forgetting to take her birth control pills, Benoit wouldn't be here! Benoit then interrupted Y2J and told him to follow his own advice, and to shut the hell up! Benoit said that every one of their matches was the same -- Jericho came out and talked, and then the Wolverine came out and kicked Y2J's ass! He then challenged Jericho to prove him wrong. The match between two of the World Wrestling Federation's young studs was a textbook in high-paced scientific wrestling. Jericho was able to turn Benoit into the Walls of Jericho, but Perry Saturn -- Benoit's partner in the Radicalz -- came down to interfere, giving Y2J the win via disqualification, but not the title. As Saturn and Malenko attacked Jericho after the match, the Hardy Boyz came down to save Y2J! SmackDown! Results 1/11/01 In six-man tag-team action, the Dudley Boyz and Chris Jericho took on Edge, Christian and Chris Benoit. Prior to the match, Edge took off his Oakland Raider jerseys to reveal a Baltimore Ravens jersey! They said that the Ravens would "totally curbtail" the Raiders this Sunday in the AFC Championship game, and as members of the Raiders booed from ringside, they presented a five-second pose called "Any Given Sunday," showing the Raiders getting their asses kicked! Also prior to the match, Chris Jericho demanded an Intercontinental Title match against Benoit at the Royal Rumble. Benoit accepted the challenge, and said he would give Y2J whatever kind of match he wanted, because there was no way Jericho would climb the ladder to the top of the World Wrestling Federation at his expense. Jericho said he would do just that -- and he said that the match at the Royal Rumble would be a Ladder Match! After only about a minute of fast-paced ring action, Stone Cold Steve Austin crashed the party and knocked out all six men with chairs! SmackDown! results 1/18/01 On "Smackdown" this week, Benoit was not in a match but still made an appearance to get set for his Ladder Match this Sunday at the "Royal Rumble" against Chris Jericho.Jericho came out and was sitting on the Ladder talking about the Ladder Match until Perry Saturn came out and that led to a fight between the two which was a setup on Jericho for Benoit to come out and further attack Jericho. They injured his shoulder with the Ladder and then Benoit applied the Crossface on Jericho. The "Royal Rumble" is this Sunday on Pay-Per View. The Rock headed to ringside to provide color commentary for the Intercontinental Championship match between Chris Jericho and the Big Show. Although The Rock was still irate at the Big Show for chokeslamming him through a table at the Royal Rumble, it was Chris Benoit who interfered in the match, kicking the Big Show for what Show did to him on RAW. Rock then joined in on the action as all three men pounded on the Show -- and Rock gave the Show a Rock Bottom on the floor! SmackDown!
