| Red Dwarf is a popular British sitcom about the last human, Dave Lister, and his existence in deep space along with a hologram of his dead bunkmate Arnold Rimmer, a creature who evolved from Lister's pet cat, a mechanoid called Kryten, and Holly, the ship's computer (supposedly with an IQ of 6000, but it's probably more like 6). I can't say who my favourite character is because there are great scenes that involve them all. I like Lister because of the idea that the last human to live is a slobby, uncouth moron; I like Rimmer because he's so neurotic and petty, but he's sweet as well because you feel sympathetic towards him (he had a bad childhood); I like the Cat because he's vain, self-centred and obsessed with clothes; I like Kryten because he has an overactive guilt chip and says such funny things sometimes! My four favourite scenes / lines are the following (in order, starting with my least favourite): MAROONED (Series III) (When Holly alerts all crew members to abandon ship - a siren is sounding when she speaks) Holly - "Abandon ship, abandon ship, Black Holes approaching. This is not at drill - this is a drill (drilling noise). Abandon ship...(siren stops) Oh gawd, now the siren's bust. AWOOGA, AWOOGA, abandon ship!" HOLOSHIP (Series V) (When Rimmer suddenly gets beamed off the ship by lifeforms unknown) Kryten - "They've taken Mr. Rimmer! Sir, they've taken Mr. Rimmer!" Cat - "Quick let's get out of here before they bring him back!" LEGION (Series VI) (When Rimmer is so petty he has to alert the four crew members - who are already in the cockpit - by going to Red Alert) Rimmer - "Step up to Red Alert" Kryten - "Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb!" Rimmer - "There's always some excuse, isn't there?!" GUNMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (Series VI) (When the crew members are trying to stop a computer virus and are caught up in a virtual reality game where they are Western characters with special abilities. They are trying to stop Kryten from leaving the game - Kryten is running towards a sign that says "you are now leaving existence", and the crew are some distance from him.) Cat - (in Spanish accent) "This is a job for the Riviera Kid!" (does a silly dance, then pulls out a gun and fires. The bullet ricochets off a pot, then a barrel, then a wall, then hits the "you are now leaving existence" sign, cutting through one of its supporting strings. The sign falls lopsidedly onto Kryten's head and knocks him out - this is a very visual gag and really needs to be seen! |
