The Lizard
01/27/1980 THE PROJECT time:21:31hours
In 1980 the united states government secretly undertook in genetic experiments attempting to sucessfully join the genes of a humanbeing and a lizard.  The governments motivation behing these experiments is still not entirely clear as there are few aside from those directly involved with the project who knew the truth
Preliminary resluts in these experiments were to say the least undesirable.  Many of the test subjects were hatched with missing limbs, inability to control their motor skills, and some were nothing more that a mess of bloody flesh and scales.  Just when the project was to be terminated the Lizard was hatched.
It was a thousand feet below the earth's surface in the secrest military base known as AreaDD (Double D) where the Lizard was hatched.  The small green egg sat precariously under an array of heatlamps, nestled comfortably in a bed of gravely sand that reflected a waivering heat into the air.  Not far from the egg's nesting point was a small pool of clear cool water that housed several carp and other small fish.  A numberl rocks, shrubs and cacti were scattered throughout the nest; and a horde of different insects filled the air, soil and foilage to create a perfect isolated ecosystem.
Dr.  Andrea Hyman watched carefully over the egg from behind a two foot thick pannel of glass.  The incubation chamber looked more like an atrist's picture to Dr. Hyman from behind the thick pane of glass, rather than the countless equasions, statistics, time, money, and red tape that the others of her department saw, to her this egg was a work of art.  Dr. Hyman turned from the window and walked towards a control pannel on the opposite wall.  She took a seat bedind the central monitor and began typing now information into the system.  Soon an onslaught of carts, diagrams, lines of code, and a billion other different bits of information related the state of the egg to Dr. Hyman.  Suddenly the door swung open with a swoosh.  Dr. Hyman turned slowly around in her chair as another scientist entered the room.
Dr. Maximus Caranius the head of the project entered the room and peared coldly at Dr. Hyman from behind a set of thick glasses.  It was the same cold blank 'what do you want' stare which Dr. Caranius greeted everyone with but Andrea could never get used to it.  Finnaly Dr. Caranius spoke,
"The deadline has been moved ahead we have only three days to show our superiors an effective prototype."
Andrea sat slightly intimidated as she blinked inocently back at Dr. Caranius, then began to reply "But the specimine....." Dr. Caranius intervined needs a minimus of four weeks to incubate!" Dr. Caranius began paseing in front of the window, "This means that we either gradually turn up the heat within the next fourtyeight hours to speed the hatching time or we must use project 22r," Caranius stopped paseing and looked directly at Dr. Hyman, "We do not want to show the funding board 22r, they would pull the plug imediatley!"  Caranius looked into the incubation chamber ignoring Andrea for a moment he then turned around and cleared his throat, "Increase the air temperature by one tenth of a degree every hour for the next twelve hours I will return then to overview the progress."
"Yes sir,"  Dr. Hyman said obediently as Dr. Caranius swifly exited the room.  Dr. Hyman knew that a change such as this could potentially ruin the entire project but with the deadline what else was there to be done, she began entering the changes into the system.
01/28/1980 THE INJECTION time: 09:35hours
Dr. Hyman awoke suddenly to a steady beep, she had fallen asleep at the console and a message now flashed across the compiuter screen: ENVIRONMENT COMPROMISED!  She jumped from her seat and rushed to the incubation chamber.  Inside the camber a figure dressed in a blue biological suit approaced the egg.  Dr. Hyman looked on in alarm as the intruder crouched over the egg and produced a large hypidermic needle that contained a blue-green liquid.  The figure sterilized a small protion of the egg and inserted the needle.  Dr. Hyman leaned anxiously against the glass as the figure injected the substance into the egg and disposed the spent needle in a biological waste bag.  The figure stood and turned to face Dr. Hyman.  Through the foggy glass Dr. Hyman looked into the intruder's mask, it was none other than Dr. Caranius.
Dr. Hyman rushed to the decompression chamber and arrived as Dr. Caranius was removing the final peices of his biological suit.
"What have you done?"  Dr. Hyman asked accusingly
Dr. Caranius peared at her coldly without a response.
"What was in that injection?"  Dr. Hyman pleaded for an explination
Dr. Caranius continued to look her down, and responded "The final solution."
Dr. Hyman stared back confused but did not argue, as Dr. Hyman threw the used biosuit and the biowaste container into a large barrel marked hazardus.   "The project will be completed on scedule, I predict the subject will hatch within the next six hours."  Dr. Caranius exited the room leaving Dr. Hyman alone.  Once Caranius was well away, Dr. Hyman began digging through the waste barrel untill she produced the biowaste container Dr. Caranius had disposed of the needle in.  The needle was marked with a single label: EXPERIMENTAL STEROID #420.  Dr. Hyman dropped the needle back into the barrel and rushed back to the observation room.
01/28/1980 THE HATCHLING time: 15:43hours
Dr. Hyman and Dr. Caranius waited impatiently in the observation room, the egg still showing no signs of hatching.  Another five minutes passed without change and then the egg twitched.  Dr. Hyman's eyes widened as another twich came.  Neither of the scientists spoke as the egg began to split from the top down.  The egg soon began to splinter into brittle shards as several scaled limbs emerged and the creature was officially hatched.  The creature was about four feet long from head to tale as it began crawling about the sand.  A scaled head that resembled a young human led the creature on its infant journey towards the pool of water.  The creature's limbs were long and seamed to gain strength and dexterity the more it moved.  The lizard creature reached the pool of water sunk it's head below the surface of the water drinking heartily then pulled it's head out and flickered slender black  tongue into the air.  The lizard looked curiously around and noticed a large dragonfly buzzing around one of the heatlamps.  The infant creature closed in on the insect and instinctivly shot it's tongue a full two body lengths towards the dragonfly.  The lightning fast tongue impaled the victim and in the blink of an eye the lizard creature was munching on its first meal.
Dr. Cranius turned to face Dr. Hyman beaming with pride, "This will change everything we know of the modern world!"
Dr. Hyman could only nod in agreement as she watched the lizard peacefully bask under on of the heatlamps, "The Lizard is born!" she said in amazement, "The Lizard is born!"
