When the fun really is.

Lygon Fest (23/10 – 24/10/2004).
Now in its 26th year, this is a must-go. The street is closed to traffic during these two days, and up to 400,000 people are expected over the weekend. Attractions include rides, market stalls, singing and dancing on the street and on a main stage, a climb-up-the-greasy-pole contest, and of course The Great Australian Waiter’s Race – a foot race of Lygon Street waiters. Orange Great Melbourne Bike Ride (21/3/2004)
Every year, three blocks of Lygon St is closed to traffic one Sunday to welcome these orange-clad riders. The event this year attracted 12,000 participants who biked through much of Melbourne, including Port Melbourne, the Grand Prix circuit, Williamstown, and Flemington Racecourse before finishing at Lygon Street. Foster’s Australian Grand Prix (4/3-7/3/2004)
Never are there as many Ferraris on Lygon Street as during Formula One’s Australian Grand Prix. Besides the thousands of Ferrari pennants and flags, stalls are also set up for Grand Prix weekend selling Ferrari merchandise, complete with sound stage and scantily-clad women. Hundreds come to Lygon Street proudly sporting bright red Ferrari attire, and if Ferrari wins, you are virtually guaranteed of seeing cars flying the red flag from their open windows and honking all down Lygon Street.
