They don't call it the The Great Ocean Road for nothing, this is supposedly one of the World's greatest costal routes. It was built by returning servicemen after The Great War to link costal communities from Warrnambool to Torquay. I rode it on the bike below, following the route as set out in Lonley Planet Cycling Australia.

Bromptoning The Great Ocean Road

Monday 8th March 2004. 51 Miles:
Traveled to Warrnambool last night on a historic V-Line train. Cycled Allansford, by-passing the delights of Cheeseworld then to Bay of Islands (below)

Camping in Port Campbell in the rain!

Tuesday 9th March 2004. 34 Miles:
Rode Port Campbell, by passing Loch Ard Gorge stopping to see The 12 Apostles (below)

The 12 Apostles, formely known as The Sow & Pigglets

Another view of some of the Apostles from Gibson Steps

Rode on to Princetown for lunch, to cries of "Bravo!, Bravo". Then lots of hilly stuff to Lavers Hill. Just before the top I stopped at Melba Gulley Rainforest (below)

Wednesday 10th March 2004. 32 Miles:
Rode Lavers Hill, through Glenaire & Marengo to Apollo Bay. Met French Tandemers on their way to Adelaide, Alice & Darwin!

Hillside in the Otway ranges

Thursday 11th March 2004. 42 Miles:
Rode Skenes Creek, Wongarra, stopped at the Cape Patton lookout. Through Kennet River & stopping at Wye River for lunch. Stopped at Mt Defiance lookout where I met a motorcyclist that showed me some of the local "bush tucker". Lorne matched the description I had been given of "overdeveloped & yucky" and I went on past Eastern View & Memorial Arch (below)

Memorial Arch

on to camp at Aireys Inlet. LP describes some of the developments as "architectural nightmares" and I was gobsmacked at the awfulness of some of the developments! So gobsmacked, in fact that I didn't take a photo myself...

House on a stick

Got the photo from here.

Friday 12th March 2004. 35 Miles:
Biked Anglesea, Bells Beach (famous from some TV show?) and watched the surfers. On to Torquay and Geelong where I got a train back to Footscray. It was a very wierd feeling to be back in the city after all those days in the country...

The best kind of Ute
