Kalamunda

April, 2000

Kalamunda, an outer suburb of Perth Western Australia and the northern terminus for the great Bibbulmun Track. Kalamunda is a hill-side suburb that is mainly surrounded by bush. This is either the start or the end place for those trepid end-to-enders. It seems as though most people do the trip in 52 to 54 days, a speedster has done it in 27 days whilst others who prefer to take it a little more easier and linger a while to smell the flowers take about 60 days. It is said that Spring is the best time to go, to experience Western Australia's fantastic wild flowers. But it can rain heavily during Spring. Summer is good, but it is hot and there are flies. Autumn is good but there are fewer flowers. It is wet during winter. Each season has its special experiences.

I was first advised that the start of the Bibbulmun track was about 50 yards away from the Kalamunda Hotel, also near the railway museum, that is in an easterly direction.

No wonder I couldn't find it as it is about 75 yards away from the Kalamunda Hotel and in a westerly direction. An error of 50%!

Looking across the road from the northern terminus. Coles Supermarket.

The starting point of the Bibbulmun track for those heading south. To the left are displays and further information about the track

Now, no mistakes of where we are. We are at a round-about and the road sign pointing at you says Station Road.

This is it, the first few steps, southward bound.

A bit overdone with these road signs in places I thought.

The Bibbulmun Track skirts the northern boundary of Jorgensen Park. A great park for walking dogs.

The Bibbulmun Track shares the same route as the Kalamunda Heritage Trail.

The informationm sign there on the Cala Munda people is quite interesting.
