| Clever Girl... >> Ambition >> Jobs Of The Past About 90% of the time when I ask people what they want to do when they 'grow up' (something which it increasingly seems is never going to happen) I shriek with excitement and say, "Wow! Me too! I used to want be that!" In my life, I've pretty much wanted to do every occupation... at some point. Here are just a few, in as accurate chronological order as I can remember them. Some may pop up more than once. carpenter teacher play director doctor writer vet marine biologist journalist scientist who communicates with dolphins actress film director teacher psychologist rock star magazine editor feminist postmodernist media analyst any darn place I can get employed in the media, hopefully somewhere nice where I can crap on about pop music and television programs all day long Compare those for a brief moment with jobs I actually have performed: 'sales assistant' - aka, making sure customers don't deal, colour co-ordinating sheets, and trying in vain to make oneself look busy. 'legal clerk' - aka, filing, filing, and more filing. And occasionally taking an obnoxious relief secretary's bills to the bank. 'maths/english tutor' - aka sympathising with students, using Dolly datable guys to make pie charts, and forcing children to read the profane stories written by one's friends in an attempt to 'improve their essay writing skills'. 'market research' - actually includes a lot of media work; radio (speaking nicely); journalism (bugging people and getting them to answer questions); PR (analysing market needs). It also involves eating lots of biscuits. 'UR editor' - opening mail, trying to scam tickets, and making up mock magazine covers with headlines about free 'N Sync sperm samples, as of yet. back |
