Clever Girl... >> Writing >> Alyssa

I wrote this for my trial HSC, or half-yearly, or something similar. It got a very good mark, so I figured, why not? ;)

"That will be $1.20, thanks," the cashier at the newsagency said, chewing on his gum.

Alyssa fumbled through her purse until she found the exact change and took her copy of
The Sydney Morning Herald as she handed the boy the money.  She had half an hour before she had to begin her work as a shelf-stacker at Woolworths, so she decided to sit in the food court for a while and read the paper.

Alyssa bought herself a hot chocolate and sat down at her usual table, taking in the steam off the mug.  It was early, so there weren't many people around and, unlike at lunchtime, she actually had a choice at to where she sat.  She opened up the paper.  World news - boring; News Review - as if!; Employment - she had a job; travel - she was broke...  Alyssa threw thev various sectiosn of the paper aside until finally she came to the personal section of the newspaper.  Now
that was something Alyssa liked to read.  She'd been single ever since she'd broken up with her boyfriend Trent three months ago and was on the lookout for a new man.  Of course, the men in the classifieds were mostly over forty - far too old for this sixteen year old - but you never knew.

Alyssa thumbed through the advertisements - walks on the beath, theatre, pretty sunrises, grey hair... Alyssa grimaced when suddently a classifed caught her eye.  "Will the girl will brown hair on the 4:15 from Strathfield last Thursday who smiled at the man on the platform please call Doug on 9467 3215."

Alyssa gasped.
She caught that train.  And she had brown hair and... was she remembering this right?... and she had smiled at a man on the platform.  Alyssa choked on her hot chocolate.  That was her!  She was the girl!  Love was coming her way at last.

Alyssa remembered the train ride clearly.  That day at school one of Trent's friends had handed her a letter from him - it was quite pitiful really.  Trent had gone on, in his usual verbose way, about how much he loved Alyssa and how beautiful she was, and couldn't they get back together?  It had been enough to make Alyssa puke.  Why couldn't he just get on with his life?  She had.

In fact, that letter had almost ruined Alyssa's whole day, until she'd seen the say at her Strathfield train station.  He had been so cute - a real Adonis!  In fact, Alyssa thought she had never seen someone so good looking - especially not Trent.  This man had stright blond hair, blue eyes and the highest cheekbones she had
ever seen.  Aklyssa was nearly hyperventilating at the thought of him.  When Alyssa had seen that man at the train station all thoughts of Trent and his whiney letter had vanished from her mind.  She was look for love, so of course she had to smile at him.

And now he liked her too.  Why else would he ever place the ad?  Alyssa only had ten minutes before she had to start work, so she left the hot chocolate and ran off to the phone box, paper in hand.  She urgently dialed the number and listened to the phone ring.

"Hello, Doug speaking," a heavenly voice came through the phone.  Alyssa almost fainted at the sound of it.

"Uh... hi!" she said nervously, yet trying to exude confidence.  "I'm Alyssa.  I'm the girl from the train station the other day... I just saw your ad in the paper..."

"Oh great," Doug replied enthusiastically.  "I've been hoping you'd call.  Listen -"

Alyssa looked at her watch.  "I've got to go to work in a couple of minutes so why did you put the message in the paper?"

"Well, I was hoping you round to my house tonight because - " Doug began.

A home invite already!  "Great, what's the address?" Alyssa asked.

"Oh.  It's... uh... 13 Stoneybrook Crescent.  Listen, I just want -" Doug continued.

"Oh cool!" Alyssa said brightly.  "That's just near my work.  I'll come around at about five.  Okay?"

"Okay," Doug replied, sounding a little disappointed.

Alyssa hung up the phone and ran off to work, with more than the usual skip in her step.  She was hardly able to concentrate all day for all the time she spent thinking about Doug.  She put washing powder in the chocolate aisle and soups near the batteries... she even sent one customer off to Franklins.  Yet, despite all this intensive thought, Alyssa's day seemed to go on forever.

Finally it was 5pm and Alyssa was able to see Doug.  She skipped all the way to Stoneybrook Crescent, enjoying the feel of the cool breeze on her face and picking flowers along the way.  Finally she came to Doug's house.  It was so pretty - she could really see herself spending time there.

Alyssa rang the doorbell and waited a few seconds before someone came to the door.  It
was the Adonis from the train station!  "I'm so glad you came by," Doug said.

"Oh, it was no problem at all," Alyssa said flirtatiously as Doug ushered her into his house.

"I have something for you," Doug said, walking into the kitchen and towards the table.

"And I have something for you!" Alyssa said, throwing her arms around Doug and kissing him.  It was best to be forward when you wanted a guy.

Doug spluttered and pushed Alyssa away, shocked.  "Alyssa!" he said, surprised.  "I know you have a boyfriend.  That's why I called you over here..." He picked up an envelope.  "To return your letter.  You dropped it at the station."

Alyssa stared at Trent's envelope in dismay.

Doug patted her gently on the shoulder.  "He really loves you.  He's one to hold onto.  Don't lose him, okay?"
