ABC's of Hiring Consultants

Most firms hire consultants, or consultant groups to fill a vacancy in a staff position, to examine entire processes from a outside-the organization view, or get efficient, professional advice for a specific problem.

    A. (Analyze) You need to know your consultant. The consultant will be working on internal facets of your organization. You need to examine their references, and in some cases, a consultant can show their previous work, provide references, or may provide a contact list. Do your homework. Many big firms hire college graduates with little or no work experience, and the big firm can back up the inexperienced by throwing money at the problem. That can cost you more, waste your time, and delay the problem solving process.

    B. (Be ready to do some work) As a Client you have responsibilities. All factors that may affect the outcome of the analysis must be revealed, so be honest. Ask for a timeline, and written reports. Require thorough documentation. To cut down on expenses you may want to take on some of the menial tasks, such as preparation of reports, or having a delegate from your organization be assigned to assist the consultant.

    C.  (Collaborate) The Consultant-Client relationship is collaborative. The underlying concept of LittleHouse: A 4GIGS Approach is that any one consultant has the ability to openly collaborate to others, as well as you. This expedites problem solving, and adds a collection of well rounded experienced professionals to use as a resource.
