What is Litter?

Under Ohio law, litter is any trash thrown, discarded or dropped by a person onto public property, private property not owned by the individual, or into Ohio's waterways. The Ohio Revised Code prohibits littering, regardless of whether or not it was intentional. Littering is a serious offense, punishable by fines of up to $500 and 60 days in jail. Litter Control

The School Program provides a variety of litter control services. Approximately 250 litter barrels are in place throughout the city in areas of heavy pedestrian traffic and in city parks. These barrels are emptied through a contract with Waste Management, Inc. and are maintained by Clean School  Program seasonal employees.

Seasonal employees operating mechanical walk-behind sidewalk sweepers provide litter collection. Litter collection is also provided through a contract with Waste Management, Inc.

Volunteer groups provide additional litter collection from time to time through litter collection events such as Earth Day and community service days. If your group would like to sponsor a litter collection event, contact the Clean School  Program. Bags, gloves and collection service for litter collected will be provided.
