Welcome to Ms. Zavos' Math Class!

In Ms. Zavos' math class, we learn inductively.  We solve math problems first, and then we make Algebraic rules based on what we have learned.  For example:  I ask you the question, "Why is the formula for the area of a triangle (1/2)base*height?"

Let's look at a problem situation.  You want to buy carpet for a rectangular room. How do you find area of that room? ... That's right, you take the length and multiply it by the width.  Then you would take that number to the carpet store and get what you need.

Then, let's suppose that your 2 younger siblings are unsatisfied that they have to share that room.  You must divide the room exactly in half or someone will complain.  As your teacher, I ask you, what is the best way to divide the room in two without measuring?  After a short discussion, we arrive at the answer.  You put masking tape down on the carpet in that room from one corner to the opposite corner.

I ask you another question.  What 2 shapes did you form by dividing a rectangular room exactly in two?  ... That's right, two identical triangles.  You could find the area of each by multiplying the length of the room by the width and then dividing it by 2.  That's just like the area of a triangle, except that they use the words base and height.

That is why the area of a triangle is (1/2)base*height.  The area of a triangle is half that of a rectangle.
