Game 11: "Race Across the Tempest"

The train makes its way peacefully to the Tribunal hall. The cohort sit together riding in silence, observing as Sleepers unknowingly "sit" on them, then feel the eerie cold-spots that the Wraiths' presences create in the Skinlands, and quickly change seats. At last the train pulls into their stop, and they get off. The first thing they do is look around for someone to ask directions from...but then they notice the gigantic synagogue-looking building rising up a few blocks away, and decide that this must be their destination and head there.

The building seems to be made of a sort of sandy-substance-- almost as if it had been built in Israel and transported here. There are carvings all around the building-- they seem to chronicle the life of King David. The cohort approaches the first guards they come to and declare that they are there to speak with the Tribunal. The guards are very surprised and amused, and tell the cohort that no one has petitioned to speak with the Tribunal in ages! Cliodhna and Ray let the guards know in so many words that they are here to petition now, and would the guards please arrange an audience for them? When the guards see that they're serious, one nods and asks them to follow him.

The cohort follows the guard into the building where they're asked to wait for a representative to come to them. Cliodhna's Shadow begins harrassing her, telling her that it has notified the other cohort-members' Shadows about who her father is, and it will only be a matter of time before the entire cohort knows. Cliodhna gets the shivers and glances at Memnon, feeling sick with worry, but tries not to convey this worry to her Shadow. Then the Shadow starts pestering her about how she should ask him to speak with her father-- to let him know that she's going to join him-- but Cliodhna mumbles that she has plenty more options to try before she'd ever consider joining Markova. Then she concentrates, and her Shadow is forced into silence for another hour.

Soon after that, their representative finally arrives. He announces that only 4 people may come and speak with the Tribunal, so it's quickly decided that Ahuru, Brianna, Cliodhna, and Ray should be the ones to go since they are the 4 highest-ranking cohort-members. Cliodhna shoots an apologetic look at Memnon, but he doesn't seem to have a problem with this decision, and the 4 follow the representative to stand before the Tribunal.

They take turns speaking with the Tribunal, letting them know of the Smiling Lord's announcement that he's now Emperor, and the logical conclusion that he will be trying to take over the Shadowlands soon. They tell them of Stygia's war with Amenti, and the impending war with New York because of their declaration of independence. They tell the Tribunal how the Ambassador of Wire has decided to support New York, and the Tribunal members nod and say that they know about this. One Tribunal member speaks, asking why they should get involved in this war? They say that they have remained uninvolved and neutral for so long, and have always harbored a resentment for the Hierarchy. Cliodhna steps forward and lays out a vision before them-- a vision of Stygia defeating the Amenti, taking New York back, and then turning...to the next-nearest kingdom: Wire. The Tribunal is sufficiently shaken up about this that they leans their heads in and whisper amoungst themselves. When they're done conferencing, they turn to face the cohort once more. One of the Tribunal members speaks, telling the group that too long has Wire sat and done nothing in the Shadowlands conflicts. They can now see the dangerous situatuation that Stygia has placed them in, and want to join with New York in fighting them. They will send 10,000 Wraiths with 50 ships to support the army! The cohort is overjoyed, and thank the Tribunal repeatedly. Cliodhna brings out a treatice document signed by Governor Paul, and the Tribunal signs next to his signature.

The 4 meet back up with the rest of the cohort and give them the good news, and then discuss where they should go next. The next closest kingdom would be Amenti, but of course they can't go there. Then Ahuru stuns the cohort by telling them that they will eventually go to Amenti...to rescue Amon. The group-members all stare at each other in amazement-- Cliodhna grins to herself in satisfaction. Ever since finding Amon so injured and downcast, she's been wanting a little revenge on those who did that to him! Not to mention it would be good to have Amon back safe and sound.

After the initial shock of Ahuru's announcement wears off, the group quickly makes their way back to the ship. On the way they decide that they'd better head south and visit Ivory next. But Ray just can't get the idea out of his head that if they could only take out the cause of all of this-- the Smiling Lord-- that they wouldn't need to recuit an army...they could end this. The others agree that this is a valid point, but how to get to Stygia when there's an embargo on New York ships? Ahuru speaks again, telling the group that they must continue on their journey to recruit for the New York army...until Jonny stuns everyone with an idea! He announces that when they were in Stygia and he played that show there, he agreed with the promoters to do a show everytime he was in the area. Therefore, maybe if Jonny took a Kingdom of Ivory ship to Stygia, they would be let through and he could do some spying while making everyone think he was there as an entertainer! Everyone-- including Ahuru-- thought that this sounded like a brilliant idea, and thanked Jonny for volunteering to do such a dangerous thing. Benwah-- the newest member of the cohort and therefore not having much in the way of an emotional attachment to the cohort-- said that he would accompany Jonny.

The cohort makes it back to the ship, and Cliodhna gives Hans the order to head for Ivory. This 3-day journey would prove to be one of the most momentous of Cliodhna's entire existence. She and Memnon would fulfill another special prophesy when they would at last reveal their feelings for one another, and join together emotionally, spiritually, and physically (Side-Story 11: "As They Always Should Have Been").

When the ship finally arrives at Ivory, Jonny and Benwah make their farewells with their cohort and board the next boat to Stygia. The cohort looks around and takes in everything about this foreign place. There are gigantic elephant tusks planted upright in the water as a sort of gateway, and ivory is used to decorate everything. They notice that the population is almost all Black, that there are many priests and shamen walking around, and that most of the well-to-do citizens seem to have white slaves with them who are dressed in simple loincloths and other minimal coverings. Friday accompanies the newly-reduced cohort down the gangplank and translates with the harbormaster about their purpose there, telling him that they wished to speak with the Queen. Cliodhna reminds Friday to tell the harbormaster that they have already been in contact with the Queen in the Territory of Ivory in New York, and that she had seemed supportive. At this revelation, the harbormaster quickly finds one of the Queen's ministers, explains the situation, and the minister agrees to lead them to speak with the Queen.

Fortunately, the minister speaks perfect English, so Friday is able to return to his duties aboard the ship. The minister leads the group until they find themselves approaching a gigantic ziggurat of some sort. After closer inspection, it appears that the ziggurat is solid inside, and serves no other purpose than to be a platform for a huge throne which rests on top. After squinting and shading their eyes, the cohort could make out the Queen's form sitting on the throne. The minister announces that they have arrived, and his eyes roll back into his head as he contacts his Queen telepathically. Within seconds, the cohort suddenly finds themselves face-to-face with the Queen of Ivory.

The Queen greets them in an appraising, dignified manner. She is a very tall woman with a neck stretched long by a stack of metal rings. She speaks slowly in a deep voice. Cliodhna bows deeply to her, and the others all make their own shows of respect. Cliodhna explains the same story she told Wire about Stygia and the army that New York is amassing, and tells the Queen that Wire has agreed to help. The Queen listens while pacing back and forth in a short line. Finally she speaks. She tells them that she will agree to help New York if they give her Harlem-- which Cliodhna agrees to-- and if they rescue her son from "the Pentex," and bring him back so she can see him. They ask the Queen what the Pentex are, and she says that they are evil beings who keep capturing and experimenting on her children.

Memnon pulls the group aside and says that he knows what Pentex is-- it's a company owned by the Wyrm, run by corrupted humans, Fomori, Black Spirals, etc. At the mention of Black Spirals, Cliodhna is ready to jump on this mission pronto, but Memnon takes her arm, warning her that if some of those creatures got a hold of her soul, there would be no coming back. This news sets the group back a little with apprehension, but when Ahuru is asked what they should do, he replies that New York needs Ivory's help, so they must do as the Queen asked. The cohort turns back to the Queen and tells her that they will attempt to rescue her son.

Somewhere in the Labyrinth...

Amber performs for Markova's soldiers

Amber is back to doing what she loves-- singing and entertaining! She stands on a stage with the Roman soldiers cheering before her as she finishes another song and bows. Suddenly she notices the men start to disappear in the very back, and continue to disappear progressively closer and closer to her until she can see Markova storming through their midst. The soldiers just in front of him disappear before he can pass them. Then Amber's stage, too, disappears and she's standing just outside Markova's fortess. She watches Markova storm inside, and follows quickly after him.

"Claudius...what's wrong?" she calls a little ways behind him. Markova grabs a flask of wine and pours himself a glass and then turns. His face is red with anger, and his eyes are terrifying. Amber is uncharacteristically hushed into silence by his look, and stands with her hands clasped in front of her.

Markova takes a long drink and then snarls, "They said no! They refused me!"

"What do ye mean? What exactly did they say?" Amber asks worriedly. Markova seems to ignore her question and continues to rant about Cliodhna, but he's especially disgusted by Ray's disrespectful manner. Amber again gently prods him to tell her what Cliodhna said, and this time Markova tells her that Cliodhna said that they wanted to try to face Stygia on their own. Amber smiles and tells Markova not to worry-- that Cliodhna must have a good plan, then. Then Markova takes a few steps towards Amber and hisses that they're going to get themselves killed. That even if they are able to raise up a larger army, the odds of defeating Stygia are near impossible! Amber again tries to reassure Markova that Cliodhna must have something up her sleeve, and maybe he should let her try it first. Markova shakes his head in frustration telling her that she doesn't understand-- that Cliodhna and her friends are as good as dead. Amber smiles hopefully and says, "ye sound like ye care fer her!" Markova takes another draw from his glass.

"The only reason I allow her to live is as a favor to you! But now...now that they have refused me, I'm going to destroy her friends! The old man and that...that BITCH have been filling her head with lies...influencing her against me!!" Markova's face starts turning red again, and Amber unknowingly takes a step back, her heart racing.

"But why? Why can't ye just let them try this on their own? Then if they fail, they will have no choice but ta finally admit that yer right!"

"Because there's no time left!" Markova shouts. "I have to wake up soon-- that Leech is going to make his rampage very soon, and I'm the only one who can face him! Cliodhna and her friends have no idea what they're up against! I am the only one who can destroy their enemies!"

"How...how can ye be awakened then?" Amber asks tentatively.

Markova stares at his glass. "I don't know...I just know that it has to happen soon!" Markova starts pacing away from Amber, his hands clenching tighter and tighter. Amber has seen this before...in her daughter. Cliodhna always gets very still and quiet just before the storm breaks. Amber braces herself and watches Markova warily.

Suddenly Markova whips around to face her and shatters his wine glass against the floor. "WHY won't they join me?!? I'm right, and they know it, so why do they FIGHT me???" He turns and paces angrily, and then turns back and shouts, "I WIN!! I WIN!! I DON'T LOSE!!" At this point Amber is petrified with terror and stands frozen watching Markova helplessly. She's NEVER seen him lose it like this, and she doesn't like what this could mean at all.

Markova turns his head, "CASSIUS!" Cassius steps into the room and bows. "We're going ahead with the plan. Take the ships and go after them! Destroy every one of them! I want them ALL dead!" Amber feels her heart seize in alarm.

"Who!? Who are you going to destroy, Claudius??" she asks in a shrill voice, taking a step forward. Markova gets a sinister grin on his face.

"I gave them the chance to join me! They'll see-- they'll watch their plans fall apart and realize that I was right all along! Then they'll be SO sorry-- they'll fall to their knees before me and BEG to join me, but it will be too late! I gave them their chance, and now...they die."

"Not Cliodhna! Not Cliodhna, Claudius!!" Amber begs near tears.

"She won't join me, Amber! She's so stubborn-- I don't know where she gets that from! If she won't join me, then she must die!" Markova states. He turns to face Cassius to give him further instructions when Amber finally cries out.

"WAIT! Wait, Claudius...I have somethin' I have ta tell ye!" Amber's shoulders slump and she feels a little dizzy. The moment has come at last...after almost 60 years of keeping her secret, the time has come to tell him. Markova calls Cassius back and holds up his hand.

"Wait, Cassius." Markova walks over to Amber. "What is it," he says in a quiet voice, all his unnerving attention riveted on Amber's face.

"I...I have been keepin' this secret fer many years. I knew that yer enemies would be able ta use it against ye, an' so would hers." Markova's eyes get big and a look of surprise starts creeping over his features. "Ye can read minds, aye?" Markova answers that he can. "Well then, read mine now." Amber and Markova close their eyes, and Amber can feel Markova's mind probing against hers. She releases her most preciously guarded thoughts to him. She gives him a vision of herself leaving his tent the morning after their first sexual encounter...shows him her look of surprise and how her hands stole over her womb as she felt the first stirrings of life within. She shows him her pregnancy in flashes...the moment she gave birth to a daughter...that daughter growing up...learning to fight with the caern...joining the IRA...it is Cliodhna."

Amber finally tells Markova that he is Cliodhna's father

When Amber opens her eyes she sees Markova staring back at her dumbfounded-- his face contorted in surprise. She had always dreamed that when the time came for him to find out, that it would be a loving and happy moment for him. That he would embrace her and tell her how happy he was. That he would love their daughter and be eternally grateful to Amber for carrying and bearing their daughter in the midst of extreme danger to Cliodhna's life. But as she watches Markova's face, it shifts to one of rage. Suddenly his arm shoots out and grabs her by the throat.

"WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU LIED TO ME ABOUT!?" he shouts, and Amber feels the strength go out of her limbs. "What else have you kept from me??" Amber feels herself go into a numb calm as she looks out at him through frightened yet trusting eyes and finds her voice.

"What else have you lied to me about!?"

"Nothing, Claudius...nothing." she answers slowly and unblinkingly. Finally when his rage has died down enough, Markova releases her throat and walks away from her. Amber calls out quickly and strongly, "Her name is Claudia." How many decades had she wanted to say that! She had named her daughter after Claudius, but had been convinced to alter the name to Cliodhna against her heart's desires, but with her better judgement. Markova turns and looks at Amber for a long moment, and then turns back to Cassius.

"Find them. Bring the girl back to me...bring the Bitch, too. Kill the rest."

Back in Ivory...

The cohort knows that time is short, so they Flicker-Fly all the way to Pentex by following the Queen's instructions. As Wraiths, they're able to make their way into the compound and into the huge vaulted room where...a Mokele is being held, chained with chains of gold! It's a Were-Tyranosaurus Rex!! Cliodhna stares with her mouth hanging open. She wonders if this is the same Crino-dino who her mother helped so long ago while searching for the pieces of the horn! The Crino-Dino opens one of its eyes weakly and looks right at the Wraiths. Cliodhna and Ray give him little smiles and gestures that they hope Crino-Dino will interpret as friendly, and then the group jumps into action. Ahuru walks over to one of the chains and wraps his hand around it, dissintigrating a link. Ray and Cliodhna fly around looking for the control-panel that will release and retract the chains. Cliodhna uses Outrage to move a few different levers, but nothing seems to happen. Then Ray Inhabits one of the workers and uses the worker's memories to figure out which one is the switch to release the chains. He forces his host to walk over and trigger the switch, and instantly warning lights and sirens start going off, and then chains fall from the Crino-Dino!

Crino-Dino lumbers up to his feet and begins to roar a deafening noise. He turns to his captures, opens his jaws, and fire streams out-- engulfing human and machinery alike and burning them instantly to crisps. Then he starts banging into one of the walls-- first his head, and then his tail. Whack! Whack! Whack! Finally the wall gives way, and Crino-Dino lunges out into the sunshine, and with another defeaning roar, he begins to run off into the jungle in the opposite direction of where the Queen is waiting. Cliodhna knows that the final stipulation of their mission is to bring Crino-Dino back to the Queen, so without thinking of any consequences, she sprouts her wings and begins Flicker-Flying after him.

She's finally able to catch up with him, and as he catches site of her out of the corner of his eye, he stops and studies her. "Humansssss..." he says in a low rasp. Cliodhna shakes her head and holds out her hands peacefully, telling him that no, she's not a human. Crino-Dino seems to nod in understanding. "Familiarrr..." he says after sniffing her, and Cliodhna nods.

"Aye, me mother helped ye rid yerself o' some humans a time ago," Cliodhna says, suddenly wondering what her mother would think if she could see her now! Her mother was absolutely terrified of Crino-Dino-- even when he was helping them!

"What you waaaant..."Crino-Dino asks, squinting at her. Cliodhna explains that his mother the Queen sent them to rescue him, and told them that she wanted to see him safe and sound with her own eyes. Crino-Dino seems to nod in understanding, and suddenly snatches Cliodhna right out of mid-air and begins to run back to the other Wraiths with Cliodhna clenched in his claw!

"Oh shit..." Cliodhna thinks when she realizes how bad this is going to look when Memnon sees her like this. She's already broken one of their guardian-rules by running off without him! When she and Crino-Dino reach the Wraiths, Memnon is glaring up at her with his arms folded.

"Oh we're going to have a talk about this later!" he shouts up to her. Then everyone's surprised when Crino-Dino offers them his back to climb up and ride back to the Queen on, but they've just spent the better part of the day trying to get to Pentex, so they accept the offer gratefully. In no time at all they are back near the harbor. Once Crino-Dino has been aknowledged by his mother, he lopes back off into the cover of the jungle. The Queen thanks the cohort profoundly, and says that she will begin to send warriors over to New York to strengthen the army. The cohort thanks her and bows, and then quickly returns to the Ulysses to continue their journey to the next kingdom.

The ship pulls out, opens a hole through to the tempest, and glides through. Immediately everyone runs to the starboard side of the ship and stares. There, waiting for them in the distance, is a huge fleet of ships! The ships have no markings on them, but it's obvious that they're spectre ships. Ray turns to Brianna and asks if she can use her Fatalism to find out what the ships want. Brianna nods and quickly goes into a meditation. She comes out almost as quickly. "Those ships belong to Markova. They're here to get Cliodhna and myself, and kill everyone else on board." Cliodhna feels a chill run through her...and then her Shadow pipes up.

"He knows...your father knows now that he is your father..." it hisses in glee. "He's coming for you! Seems he wants a little daddy/daughter talk!"

"Mother must have told him!" Cliodhna thinks in a panic. "She told me she'd only tell him if my life was in danger..." Cliodhna's eyes grow hard. "Shadow, tell my mother I want ta speak with her again!" Cliodhna's Shadow laughs.

"OK...it will just be a few minutes." her Shadow replies a little too helpfully. After a few minutes pass, the Shadow returns. "Nope, sorry, can't do it." it answers smugly. "The time for family reunions is over." Cliodhna punches one of the masts in anger. Her Shadow continues, "Her love is more than her blood!" and starts laughing gleefully while Cliodhna feels a momentary panic. Could it be possible that her mother would choose Markova over her own daughter?? Cliodhna quickly pushes that thought aside. Right now what she needs to be thinking about is how they're going to get away from those spectre-ships. They've been speeding along as fast as they can go, but the spectre ships seem to be gaining on them. Memnon yells to the crew to make the ship go faster, but they're already going at its top speed.

Cliodhna turns to Ahuru and asks him if maybe now they should give up trying to recruit more people and get back to New York, but Ahuru shakes his head and tells her that they must continue on their mission. She asks him what he thinks they should do, and he says he does not know. Cliodhna grows frustrated and impatient-- she wants answers and she's not getting any that make sense to her! If her father wants her and Brianna, then he will pursue them no matter where they go, so to her this mission suddenly seems futile! Brianna and Ray have to remind her that if the Ulysses is captured, everyone else will be killed. Cliodhna looks at Memnon-- she couldn't live without him now after finally finding him again. "Then we will not be caught!" she says in an angry and determined voice.

Cliodhna and Ray put their heads together. Cliodhna recently learned how to steer a tempest ship pretty well, and she can also alter the speed of any object. Ray could use his Pandemonium to speed up time on the ship! Cliodhna runs to the wheel-- activating her arcanoi to speed the ship-- and Ray holds onto one of the masts and activates his Pandemonium, and suddenly the ship leaps forward like a bullet and shoots ahead at an incredible speed. They did it!

As Cliodhna clings to the wheel, getting it under control, she and the rest of the cohort confer about where exactly they should go now. If they go to Swar-- the next-closest kingdom-- the ships will just be waiting for them when they try to leave...not to mention that they're going so fast now that they're just about to pass Swar! If they tried to turn at this point, they might capsize the ship, and if they were successful in turning, they would probably plow right into the docks! At least the spectre-ships were starting to fade into the distance. The cohort made the decision to move on to the Kingdom of Jade. That would give them enough time to slow down and stop safely.

When the time comes, Cliodhna and Ray de-activate their arcanoi...unfortunately Ray de-activates his too fast, and everyone on board has to scramble to keep their balance. Ray smacks his head into the mast he's been holding onto, and Friday-- completely losing his balance-- goes flying into Ray. Cliodhna is able to steer the Ulysses gently into port, and everyone on board exhales in relief.

The cohort disembarks, explains their story to an official-looking person, and that person leads them quickly to the Jadian Palace. They're shown a place to wait, and told that Foreign Minister #3275 will be with them shortly. As the wait stretches into a half hour, Cliodhna begins to pace worriedly. The minutes continue to tick by, when suddenly Memnon turns to her and asks in an angry voice, "When were you planning on telling me? My Shadow just told me..." Cliodhna quickly cuts him off.

"And when do ye ever believe what yer Shadow tells ye then? I think I'm goin' ta buy ye a nice castigation as the soonest opportunity!" Memnon looks sheepishly at her.

"I'm sorry, Cliodhna-- you're right." he apologizes, and the waiting begins again. Finally after an hour has passed since they were first shown in, Foreign Minister #3275 makes his appearance. Cliodhna tells him that they need to speak with the Emperor, and the Minister laughs and says that no one may see the Emperor-- that's what his Foreign Ministers are for! The cohort quickly relays the same story to the Foreign Minister as they've already told Wire and Ivory, but this time they get a different reaction. The Minister smiles and says that the Kingdom of Jade is by far the largest of all the Kingdoms with an average of 2 billion people. They do not fear Stygia, and if Stygia is foolish enough to attack them, they will obliterate them. Cliodhna argues that if Jade will simply help them obliterate Stygia now, then all the Kingdoms will be left unscathed, and everyone can get back to life as they know it. But the Minister isn't moved. He says that Jade has always kept out of the rest of the Shadowlands' problems, and they will continue to do so. They have eyes everywhere, and they will know the instant anyone tries to move against them. Cliodhna folds her arms and asks if they knew about the fleet of spectre-ships waiting just outside their boundaries in the tempest, but the Foreign Minister simply raises his eyebrows, not looking very concerned. Suddenly the Minister's eyes close, and when he opens them he smiles a little smile and tells the cohort that the Emperor is very honored to have the Daughter as his guest, and that he has decided to see them, after all.

Cliodhna looks with alarm at Brianna and Ahuru, but no one knows what to make of this. The cohort follows Foreign Minister #3275 out into a beautifully manicured garden. As they're looking around, they suddenly feel a presence and turn. It is the Emperor. Everyone feels an overwhelming sense of majesty surrounding them, and suddenly Ray's on the ground bowing to the Emperor. Everyone else has enough self-control to merely bow respectfully to the Emperor. The Emperor is very tall and thin with a youthful complexion, and his face and hair are done up in an elaborate ancient style. He wears emerald-green robes with gold trim, and holds a large ring in his fist made of pure jade. He greets the cohort cordially, yet distantly.

The cohort begins to explain why they're there, but the Emperor cuts them off, reiterating that Jade will remain neutral in all things. He says that he's well-aware of the spectre-ships out just past the harbor, and they do not cause him concern. Cliodhna tells him that if his kingdom will not help, then the cohort must be on their way. The Emperor smiles and says that they MUST stay the night as his guests, and he will throw them a marvelous banquet. Again various members of the cohort try to insist that he let them go as their very Necropolis' life depends on them getting to each and every Kingdom. The Emperor listens patiently, and then answers by telling them that they will stay as his guests because it will take his people a couple of days to rid them of the spectre-ship-problem. He again says that the cohort WILL stay as his guests. He insists. Cliodhna looks to the other cohort-members with raised eyebrows. If the Emperor will destroy the ships, then it might be worth it to wait a couple of days. Cliodhna thanks the Emperor for his hospitality and help, and the Emperor sends for someone to show the cohort to their rooms.

On the way to the rooms, Ray suddenly looks at Cliodhna with distrust. "So...you're the daughter of Markova?" Cliodhna's eyes flick to Memnon, but luckily he's engaged in a conversation with Ahuru and didn't hear. Cliodhna grabs Ray's arm and tells him to quiet down-- she will have the entire group come to her room so they can discuss this. Everyone is shown where their rooms are-- which are stunningly gorgeous and lavish-- and Cliodhna announces that she would like to call a meeting right now in she and Memnon's room. Memnon gives her a smile, and she feels like her heart is going to break. What will he do when he learns the truth??

The group enters Cliodhna and Memnon's room, and Cliodhna asks Ahuru what he thinks they should do. Should they stay, or keep trying to leave? Ahuru answers that they should try to get away as soon as possible-- that something is wrong. Cliodhna asks if Ahuru knows this Emperor, or knows anything about him, and Ahuru shakes his head that he does not. He adds-- with eyebrows lowered-- that the Emperor has no Shadow, and he's only sensed that once before...with Markova. The group looks around at each other in alarm. Is this man a god? Who IS he?
