William Michael O'Connor grew up in a small town in Maine. His parents weren't very religious but he was a devout Catholic, following after his grandfather. William was very close to his grandfather. When his grandfather wasn't traveling the world (for reasons William would find out when he was older) he and William would spend time together.
When William was older, his grandfather told him the purpose of his travels: to find the Holy Grail. He showed William the the notes of eighteen generations of his family. For over eight hundred years his family had sought the Grail. Not every generation, but at least two per century. William's father did not want to, but William immediately swore to take up the family quest. Five years later, William's grandfather passed on. Before he died, his grandfather gave William the sword that had belonged to the first of their family to take up the quest, an English knight of the Third Crusade.
For the next five years William did what he could to search. Unfortunately he had few resources beyond the notes of his forefathers. That was when he found the Arcanum, or more to the point, they found him. He was happy to join. At the time he was living in England, using the great library there to search.
Four years later he moved back to the United States and joined the Boston chapter of the Arcanum. He spent little time there, constantly traveling to different places chasing leads. After three years back in the States William was approached by a man who claimed to be part of a group of men who were devoted to Christ and were sworn to fight evil in all it's forms, and invited William to join them. Unfortunately, their idea of what was evil was a little too broad for him, so he regretfully turned them down.
It was on one of these trips, three months later, that he died. He had recieved a call from a Catholic priest who swore to him that he could tell William the location of the Grail. William didn't waste a second. He informed the head of the chapter house that he was leaving for New York and headed there as fast as he could. He didn't even bother to get a hotel room.
He parked his car right outside the church and got out. As he ran up the steps he heard the tell-tale sound of automatic gunfire. He barely turned his head when the first bullets ripped into his back. He hit the pavement and stared up into the night sky. Distantly he heard the squealing tires of a car racing away. As his life slipped away he glanced toward the doors of the church as the priest he came to see ran out, his face a pale mask of anguish. He whispered to William as he slipped away but he only caught a little, "Seek the Grail in...."He sank into a murky gray world, constrianed by something. His first thoughts were of his failure but then, he saw a bright light, and heard God tell him he had been given a chance to continue the fight against darkness. Inspired by this vision he fought against the thing that constrained him. He prayed to God for the strength to break free, and with a massive feat of stregth, powered by unwavering faith, he ripped free, only to find himself in a bizzar world unlike anything he had ever seen. He found his bible, his crucifix, and his grandfather's sword were still with him. God had allowed his soldier to keep the tools of his Faith to fight evil.
He looked around and saw a pair of hideous creatures approaching him. "So the Fallen One has sent his servants to dispatch the soldier of Light before he could free himself." he thought. Then a voice from inside his head whispered, a voice like his but darker, colder, "We must go with them...They have come to help us." The creatures grew closer as he fought the Devil's whispers. Finally, scooping up his sword he charged the demons of darkness, his blade blazing with the holy light of his faith. He would pass this first test, and show the Lord he was worthy of this second chance. And he did.
Thoughts of the Shadow
Hehehehe....William...you're such a fool. I try to show you that evil is all around you, that you yourself are evil, but you don't listen...you don't see. But I guess I should expect that from someone who stalks the world looking for an artifact that doesn't even exist.
But that's ok, William. I'll show you that my minions are everywhere. Oh, hadn't you guessed it yet, William? I am Satan, I am Lucifer...and I am you. You see, William, you're already evil and corrupt, it's up to me to show this truth to you. I mean, you let your friend die in that cave in Turkey...a normal person wouldn't have done that...a normal person would have argued longer. Don't you like the Truth, William?
I mean, it should be refreshing after living a life of lies. Of course, I know this Truth is hard on you, but I don't have time to break it to you gently. For now, I am content to just watch...and wait ...and point out my separate machinations to you. Because William, in the end, you will see the Truth, and it will destroy you if you're not ready. So just listen to me. I'm your friend.
