Alec looked at his watch as he drove along the highway. The Beatles blared in the gremlin, as he sang along. Grinning he looked at Nettle and put a hand on her knee. "Allo love. Feel like a bite?"
Nettle grins mischieviously at Alec. "Yes I would-- how about here?" Nettle pulls her coller down a few inches and winks at Alec.
Alec laughs as he finds a diner and pulls over. Leaning to Nettle he gives her a quick nibble. "How's that? I've worked up an appetite, so let's eat here."
Nettle looks at Alec for a moment with her eyebrows raised, and then turns and jumps out of the car. Hurrying over to him, she puts her arm through his and leans up to whisper. "I've worked up quite an appetite, myself, although it looks like not the same one as you've worked up, Alec. Ah well-- you really should get a good meal into you-- you'll need the strength soon enough!" Nettle moves her free hand to rest just below Alec's tattoo.
Just then an elderly couple exit the diner and give the couple a startled look. Nettle smiles and wiggles her ring-finger at them. "Just married!" she explains. The couple break into matching knowing grins.
"Well, son," the man says turning to Alec. "What are you doing out and about instead of snuggled up somewhere warm with a beautiful bride like this on your arm?"
"We're off to San Fransisco, but we're stopping here for a quick bite. Need all that energy, what." Alec smiles at Nettle.
Nettle grins at Alec and smacks him on the bum. "That you...er, WE, will, my love!" The couple laugh and the man nods to Alec. "You're a lucky young man-- treat her right, y'hear?" The old woman pats Nettle on the arm. "Have a lovely time, dear, and congratulations!" Nettle smiles glowingly. "Thank you so much!" Taking Alec's arm again, the two enter the diner smiling and laughing.
Alec opens the door for Nettle and shows her to a table. He picks up a menu and begins looking it over. "I haven't had an American cheeseburger yet. I think I'll give a see." Alec smiles as he puts the menu down and looks at Nettle.
Nettle looks at Alec incredulously. "You've been here all this time and never tried a cheeseburger?? Yes-- I'd say it's about time, baby!" Nettle laughs and looks down at her menu. "I think I'll have the veggie sandwich and an English muffin...are those any good, Alec? The English muffins?" Nettle smirks over the top of her menu, looking into Alec's eyes lovingly.
Alec laughs and looks at the picture in the menu. "Much better than those awful bloody Australian toaster muffins." Alec reaches into his jacket and pulls out a clove. He hands one to Nettle. "I'm glad Veil turned me onto these."
Nettle laughs a sincere, long laugh at Alec's joke, and then has to wipe the corners of her eyes. Shaking her head, and grins at Alec. "Wow-- I didn't know you'd been exposed to cloves! Finally something we can both smoke together!" Nettle takes the clove and leans forward as Alec lights it for her.
Just then a waitress in her late 40s with a large pile of auburn curls towering on her head comes over and stands with her weight shifted to one hip. Taking the couple in in one sweeping glance, she shakes her head and concludes that they must be stoned-- sitting there with goofy looks like that on their faces! And that sweet-smelling smoke! The nerve of them! She holds her order pad out and shifts her chewing gum to one side of her mouth. "You two kids ready to order now?"
Alec nods and orders for the both of them. He then looks at the waitress' gaze at his clove. "Want some?"
The waitress drops the order pad to her waist and gives Alec a tired, icy look. "Yeah, and I wanna lose my job and not be able to make the payment on my double-wide, too. Thanks for the offer, honey." The waitress walks away with a sway to her ample hips and disappears behind the counter.
Nettle watches until she's gone, and then starts laughing. "I bet she thinks we're high, baby!" Nettle leans forward and grabs Alec by the lapels, pulling him over the table. Taking his face in one hand, and holding his lapel with the other, she plants a very long, passionate kiss on his lips.
Once the liplock is over, Alec laughs, "I was just trying to be nice, right?" He smiles, "Always sharing an all. There goes her tip, eh?"
Nettle grins. "Nah...it's our honeymoon! Let's spread the love, baby!" Nettle gets a thoughtful, worried look on her face. "I hope our parents won't get in too much trouble while we're gone. Where are yours staying, anyway? Mine are staying with my aunt and uncle-- Natalie's parents. That's mom's sister." Nettle grins a dangerous grin. "How about if the 6 of us go out for dinner together when we get back from our honeymoon?"
"Mine are staying at a local hotel. They were pretty excited about the club scene. Out to dinner sounds great, if you can stand my parents for that long." He says as the waitress sets down their orders.
Nettle watches as the waitress deposits the food in front of them-- giving her the nicest smile she can-- and then after the waitress leaves, Nettle leans back in towards Alec. "I get the impression your parents have been a source of humiliation for you. Are you mad at them about something-- what's the matter, baby?"
"Nah, but they can be hard to take for long periods of time. Like all parents, I suppose. You seem to have a great relationship with yours." Alec says after swallowing a mouthfull of food.
Nettle takes a bite of her sandwich and thinks. "I'm an only child, and the three of us living in a conservtive city in Idaho-- we HAD to stick together! We were freaks!" Nettle laughs and stops again, a serious look on her face. "There WERE a lot of old hippies up there that they hung around with-- probably still do-- I love my parents a lot..." Nettle looks at her food without seeing it for a time. "After leaving home, I saw them at high school graduation, college graduation, and then now. That's it. We should probably sit down and talk about what happened that night-- I know I have a lot of underlying resentment, and they probably have a lot of underlying nervousness around me now." Nettle looks up and comes out of her thoughts. "Well, that was a lovely little speech I gave, wasn't it!? Sorry to dampen the mood like that..." Nettle takes another bite out of her sandwich.
Alec takes her hand and smiles, "Don't worry love, my mood is always good when you're about."
Nettle looks down at their clasped hands-- wedding rings shining near each other-- and sighs quietly. "We're married..." she whispers. Looking up at Alec, she shakes her head a little. "You're my husband-- it's just starting to sink in. Husband! I'm your wife..." Nettle pulls Alec close again and presses her forehead against his.
Alec smiles and looks out of the window at the gremlin. He frowns as he watches two people open the door. "Hey that's-" his eyes widen as suddenly they hop in and take off. Alec gets up and sprints out of the diner, "HEY THAT'S MY CAR!!!"
Nettle drops her sandwich and runs after Alec in a panic that starts turning to anger. Standing outside with him, she clenches the pendant around her neck and tries sending out her mind to the people in the car, but they're too far away and she can't get a lock on them. "Damnit Alec! What are we going to do!?" Nettle clenches her fists in frustration.
A cab pulls up and a smiling driver opens the door. "Hey you two look like you need a ride, hop in!!" Alec wastes no time and gets in the cab.
Nettle glances back at the diner with a worried look-- thinking of their unpaid-for food is still sitting on the table-- but doesn't have time to do more than let the thought slide through her mind before she jumps into the cab with Alec. She sends a thought to Alec as she does so. "This is an unusual cab driver..."
Alec looks at the cabbie and his eyes widen, "Hey I know you!" The cabbie smiles and suddenly Alec's eyes close as he falls unconsious, "Yes you do!" Nettle's eyes get heavier as she feels some type of magic being used on her.
Nettle tries to keep her eyes open for a few seconds longer-- using the sphere of Life to tell her what kind of creature they are being enchanted by-- and as her head falls back against the seat, she murmurs "Fae..."
Later that night... Alec sits up, he feels next to him and sighs in relief as he feels Nettle's body next to him. Reaching over he turns on the lights. The hotel room is cheesy to say the least. The bed is heart shaped and the entire room is covered in hearts and red flowers. There's a note on the nightstand.
"Sorry for the sneakiness, but we thought you two were taking too long. Now get down to business." Alec shakes his head and shakes Nettle awake.
Nettle feels herself coming awake, and finally opens her eyes to see Alec beside her. Once she's able to focus, she takes in their surroundings. "What the...?? What's going on? Why are we here, baby? This your parents' weird idea of a honeymoon surprise?" Nettle smiles groggily and puts a hand to her head.
"No I don't think so." Alec says as he stands to look out the window. He motions for Nettle to take a look. Nettle gets up with a little grunt, and then walks over to stand beside Alec at the window-- putting her arm around his waist.
Outside the window, several strange looking Fae stand there all smiling. One a very large rabbit pooka with big floppy ears grins and gives them the thumbs up. "All hail the parents of the child of light!" They shout.
Nettle turns to Alec slowly. "Child of the light??" Nettle looks panicked and closes her eyes, concentrating on her life-force. After a minute she opens them and looks confused. "I'm not pregnant-- what do they mean?" Nettle opens the window and leans out. "What do you mean? We don't have any children!"
The tall handsome looking Fae smiles, "You will be! You will birth the child that shall lead us to Arcadia. Now go to it!" Alec turns to Nettle, "Do I know how show a lady a good time or what?"
Nettle turns to Alec with her mouth open and pushes him playfully in the chest. "Alec!! Do you want to go along with this?? How are we going to get them off our back if we don't suddenly produce a child? And why us??" Nettle turns from Alec and calls out, "why us?? Why do you think we are meant to be the parents of this child?" Nettle looks from Alec to the group outside.
Alec takes Nettle's arm and leads her away from the window. "They don't know I'm fixed so that's ok. We'll get them off our backs once we do our thing. Trust me it'll be ok, they won't harm us...I think."
Nettle looks at Alec for a moment, and then a grin spreads across her face. "Yes...let's at least give them what they want..." Nettle suddenly puts on a phony concerned look. "For the Fae, of course. We're doing it for them."
"For the Fae, baby, for the Fae!" Alec says picking her up and carrying her to the bed, to the delighted shouts of the Fae.
