Shiprock is located on Navajo land and is considered sacred. It is said that at sunset Shiprock appears to shimmer and float.

Shiprock is a diatreme. A diatreme forms when hot matter from the deep interior escapes explosively and the vent is left filled with breccia. The sedimentary rocks through which Shiprock burst through have eroded, leaving Shiprock to stand 1,700 feet above the surrouding desert.
