Dance of Submission

Review by: Lisa Bishop
The Novella, the Dance of Submission by Jude Mason, blends the harshness of a dominant with the ideal romantic dominant that so many submissives crave. With an obscure setting as far as era is concerned, Mason develops her own world where slaves are sold at auction, travel is by horseback and meat is grilled upon a fireplace.
Dipping into this delicious setting of a rugged life with a dominant like Roy, who chose Jude and paid the top dollar for her at auction, teases the readers' sense of fantasy yet causes one to pause to consider their own fantasy dominant. While he is straightforward and relentless when it comes to the rules of his estate and punishment, he is also the romantic who lavishes over his submissives, his love for Willow and his apparent care and concern for Jude. With Roy, the reader gets the sense that he sees Willow and Jude as more than just mere property. While she'd be sold again if she didn't please him eventually, he is open to her growth and training as a novice, certain of Willow's ability to mentor Jude.
With a free flowing style such as Mason's that builds the story in the voice of first person, from Jude's point of view, the reader empathizes with Jude's anxiousness of a new master, her concern for the new girls upon the auction block, her fears of punishment and how she makes mistakes that put her on the tail end of her Master's strap or whip on her first few days at his estate.
Throughout this delicious 84 page novella, Mason explores not only the journey of a submissive who is chosen to be part of a poly relationship, but also the role of the 'first girl,' Willow. Willow's acceptance of Jude is beautiful as it breaks down the expected petty barriers of jealousy and abandonment and replaces them with acceptance, mentoring, and above all else, sisterhood.
Jude Mason's Dance of Submission from Amatory Ink explores more than just fantasy and BDSM as the reader can't help but consider their own expectations of a dominant or a submissive while reading this delightful novella. As with her other projects, novel, The Switch and "Jackie's New Life" a short story that is included in Amatory Ink's Mythic Fantasies (Roy Larkin, ed.), Dance of Submission's erotic scenes are flawlessly choreographed and uniquely detailed.
