| 7th Grade Fiction Standard | ||||||
| This standard has 5 different tasks. The skills for these tasks have been taught and practiced several times throughout the year. During 4th quarter, students will be revising, improving, and/or redoing these tasks to create a collection of their best work for the teacher to evaluate. This collection of work, the portfolio, will be scored according to a district approved rubric on a scale of 1 through 4.. A copy of the rubric and scoring criteria can be accessed by clicking here. More information can also be found at the MN graduation standards site. Click here for a copy of the student checklist that was provided for students to put in their Writer's Notebook. Here is a brief description of the 5 Tasks that students must complete to meet the requirements for the Fiction standard: Task 1: Students will create a Fiction Log. It will contain a number of practice logs representing reading, listening, and viewing. The Fiction Log will include a retelling of the story, including major characters, setting, sequence of events, conflicts and an evaluation according to preestablished criteria. Task 2: Students will maintain a Vocabulary Log. A final product of 10 vocabulary words will be assessed on parts of speech, definition, and an correct original sentence.We call these Words to Own Posters Task 3: Students will complete a Prediction Chart based on inferences while reading, viewing or listening to the beginning of a fictional work. Students will summarize predictions, actual story outcomes and the accuracy of the student's predictions. Task 4: Students will categorize events, behaviors, or characters within a fictional work through the use of a Character chart. Task 5: Students will create 3 examples of their use and understanding of figurative language (simile, metaphor and personification). Students will be completing this element during our poetry study. The first 4 of these tasks will be arranged together in a designated section of the student's portfolio labeled "Fiction" for evaluation by the teacher.
