Alexandrite is a very rare stone. Its made of Chrysoberyl, BeAl^2O^4. Alexandrite changes color depending on the light, which adds considerable value.

Alexandrites color comes from replacing some of the aluminum with chromic oxide.
Hardness- 8.5

Alexandrite was discovered in the 1830's during the time of the russian czar, Alexander II, who  it is named after.

The gem is said to provide balance in a persons life, increase self-esteem, and bring happiness and wealth.
The first and best mining site for alexandrite was in Russia. After its discovery there it was also found in Brazil, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar.
