February- Amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. To be amethyst the stone must be purple, all other stones of the same basic composition but a different color are considered quartz.
Amethyst like all quartz is made of Silicon dioxid, SiO^2. It comes in all shades of purple and is availible in many countries around the world.

The name amethyst is Greek and means "not drunken" probably referring to its wine like color.

Amethyst is mined in Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Canada, Africa, Italy, Germany, Russia and the U.S. Amethyst experts can identify the country and even the mine the amethyst comes from by its color and crystal shape.

Amethyst has long been considered a royal gem. There are amethysts one the British Crown Jewels and many Egyptian Royality also had amethysts as a sign of prosperity and wealth. In fact if it weren't so easy to get them, amethysts would still be one of the most valuable gems in the world. Even without the class of diamonds, amethyst is still very popular for its color and shape.
