October 14th, 1859

I had tried for the last two days to nerve myself for the parting hour with Teresa, and had strength given me to bear it pretty well, but with her young arms around my neck and her warm face to mine, I felt that it might probably be our last embrace. If so, I pray God to have her in his keeping, and that we may meet in a better world. She has a kind good husband, and every prospect of happiness in this. They left here at 4 pm all at Eldon (excepting myself), the Griffins, Mr Becher, and Fanny saw them off at the station. John went with them as far as Hamilton, on his way to Toronto. He was ill all the way. I hope his trip to Toronto may benefit him. How desolate a house looks after one of the household have left, there is only the empty room, the vacant chair at table, the fragments of discarded (?) thrown about, and the familiar step and cheerful voices no longer heard.
