The diary began as a series of letters to her son, John, who was in England seeking medical treatment, and Amelia was writing down daily events to send to him. She would continue to write in her diary for the next twenty-five years, until only a few weeks before her death in 1882, detailing the lives of her family and household and providing a fascinating glimpse into nineteenth century life. |
