The newpaper or local auto wreckers is a good spot to look for the engine. If you live in canada(like me), the bargain finder is a good place to look (thats where i got mine)
You should look around for a GOOD engine, preferably running, dont settle on something your not sure about (i found out the hard way). The first one i bought only cost me $150 dollars but it was out of the vehicle so i couldnt hear it run. Well after i got it home installed, and running i find out that the blocks cracked (coolant and chunks of metal in the oilpan usually isnt a good thing) :(. The tranny works find though, so it wasnt a total loss. I wasnt going to make the same mistake twice, i located one for $225 from a 87 cutlass. I got to hear the engine run this time so i knew what i was getting.
Heres a pic of the first engine i bought on the hoist. I was so pi$$ed, i was thinking of putting it on the ba$tards front step but decided to save it for parts.( theres my brothers 81 Z28 (383ci)  in the background)
