The golden wolf- who might this be?
It might be Fenris. It might be the great wolf mother that suckled and nurtured Romulas and Remis. It might be a variant of Jackel-headed Anubis. It might be a transcendant of the white wolf of N.A.style shamanism or of the great black hound who occompanies Hecate through the underworld. However, none of these seem to quite fit. Lupercus's golden color easily links him to the sun and to Dianus.
What role does he have in this ritual and how does this portend to the world?
His role in the ritual is as the God. His is yet another face of Janus, like Dis before.
The wolf is a perfect predator that preserves the balance of nature, culling only the sick, weak, and elderly from the herds it hunts. Therefore, the wolven nature of Lupercus is a balancing energy as Winter reaches it's midpoint (at least in my region, NE U.S.) and begins to turn once more towards spring.
His nature is also firey; a divine golden fire that enlivens and calls to the seed to burst forth and reach for that golden divine glory. We can benifit greatly from these energies by looking toward the things we no longer need, that only drain us and hold us back and discover the ways in which we can turn them into the fertile spiritual ground for new growth. The earth does the same during the remaining time it waits for Spring to arrive.
He is the King of Waning Winter and youthful sun god in all the wildness of youth, slowly growing to maturity.
Much better for the wolf to be your friend than your enemy, I would think. The bond between canine and human is milleniums old. It is set into our genetic memory. Also, I think we admire their ferelity; the enthusiasm with which they live. You don't see too many wolves vegging out on the couch with a bag of chips and a remote.
That part of us that is yearning to howl and be free:
Howling is celebration of unity or of success in the hunt. It can also be a sound of mourning, a letting go of pent up emotion, and thus a release from stress. Remember, stress is the condition that natural occurs when the civalized mind overides the physical urge to attack. For us as humans, it can be a celebration of our success over those types of unacceptable urges. Wolf pups also howl when they are in distress. When wolves howl, they wait and listen afterwards to see if another pack will howl back in answer. This shows us the importance of not only expressing ourselves but also of listening to the response. The howls are an important part of their communicative process.
Both spiritual and physical levels
Physically, the wolf is in constant motion from the time it awakens till the time it sleeps; playing, hunting, and mating. They lead an active lifestyle and can be an inspiration to those who live or seek such a lifestyle. The playful and energetic energies, as well and the cunning and drive to stay alive can manifest in our spiritual lives, awakening us with the wolf's call to live our lives to the fullest.
