1885
Louis Pasteur administers the first anti-rabies vaccine to a nine-year-old schoolboy. Medical professionals treat the vaccine with suspicion at first, but it soon catches on.

In memory of famous ornithologist James Audubon, the National Audubon Society is founded in the United States to study bird species.
1886
Chicago police officers shoot four strikers at a May 1st rally for the eight-hour day. The Knights of Labor holds a rally in Haymarket Square to protest the shootings; a bomb goes off, killing a policeman, and the police open fire on the crowd, killing many workers.

The Statue of Liberty is dedicated in New York Harbor.
Anton Chekhov premieres his first play, Ivanov, in Moscow. Although Chekhov has little initial success,
he will soon become an acclaimed playwright and short story writer.

Congress creates Yellowstone National Park to be a refuge for buffalo and big game.
1887
Several prostitutes are mysteriously murdered in the East End of London in the Whitechapel, Spitalfields, and Aldgate Districts over the period of four months. The killer is never identified and the case becomes the most notorious and mysterious crimes in history. The name given to the murderer by the media is "Jack the Ripper"; based on a letter that was supposedly written by him to the Central News Agency giving information about his next kill.
George Eastman invents the Kodak camera, making it possible for anyone, not just professionals, to take photographs.

The Eiffel Tower is completed. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889
International Exhibition, Paris, the centenary celebration of the French Revolution.
Jane Addams opens Hull House in Chicago. It's part of the settlement-house
movement to help immigrant populations adjust to American life both materially
and culturally.

The
Wall Street Journal begins publication.
