8. Amos Dickens JONES
was born on 1 Jan 1827 in Birmingham, AL. The 1880 Census says he was born
in TN. He appeared on the census in 1860 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX. John
Coker, a farmer, aged 70, born in S.C., with $700 in real estate, John Pirnie
and William Wilt live with them. He was a farmer in 1860 in San Antonio, Bexar
Co., TX. He lived in the Coker Community from 1850 to 1890. He served in the
military on 22 Mar 1862 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX.
(10) He was a 3rd Sergeant., Co. C, 32 Col. P. C. Wood's Regiment
Texas Cavalry, Co. C, 36 Texas Cavalry inlisting for 3 years or for the War.
He was in the Confederate Troops, part of the Captain Joel K. Stevens' Company,
Texas Mounted Riflemen. He was 35 years old in 1862. He was on detached service
chasing after deserters as a 1st Sergt. on August 31, 1863. He was given $125
for horse and $25 for equipment. H was given furlough March 2 to April 15, 1965.
As a Prisoner of War, he was paroled by Major General Merritt in San Antonio
on September 9, 1965. Amos Dickens Jones signed papers as the attorney testifing
to the service of James H. Coker in the same Regiment so that Coker received
$133.31. A
William H. Jones of San Antonio and a Corp. John N. Jones of Belmont, Tx are
in the same Regiment. He served in Louisiana. He appeared on the census in 1880
in San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX. Page 250 Jones listed as Johns. Amos, Jane,
Henry, Martha, Lee B., Charles Ed, and herder , John Henderson living on the
place. He died on 26 Dec 1906 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX. San Antonio Gazette

AMOS D. JONES
Amos D. Jones, a resident of Bexar County for the past 61 years, died yesterday
afternoon at his home on the Salado, about seven miles north of the city, aged
80 years. He was a Confederate Veteran and an old member of the Masons. He
is survived by 9 children, as follows: Taylor Jones, John Jones and Henry Jones
of this city, Lee and Ed Jones of the Salado and Seeborn Jones of Nevada; Mrs.
Kate Van Riper; Mrs. Martha Shannon of this city and Mrs. Jennie Nicholson of
Glasscock County. Another daughter of the deceased was the late Mrs. W.H. Van
Riper. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the family home on the
Salado, interment being in the cemetery at that place.
Amos was the head of the Cibolo Masonic Lodge in the 1880's. He was buried
in Coker Cemetery, Bexar Co., TX. He was Coker Methodist Church trustee and
community leader.. Amos D. Jones traveled with his father-in-law, Joseph Coker,
to Bexar County, Texas, to settle on the land granted to john Coker, the brother
of Joseph Coker, by the state of the Republic of Texas. Amos D. Jones was a
Sgt. in the CSA during the war between the States. All of the ten children born
to Jane Maria and Amos Jones were born in Bexar County, Texas. SAN ANTONIO GAZETTE

Amos Dickens Jones carved the tombstones for many of the first people buried
in the Coker Cemetary. Beatrice Nagel has a fossil starfish carved on five sides
like a star and with his name on the bottom. V. Royce Jones has a large stone
carved with A. D. Jones. Linda Perry has a peach pit basket he carved for Ethel
Jones. Ethel gave it to Margaret Billingsley and Margaret gave it to me. He
was married to Jane Maria COKER on 16 Jan 1845 in Talladega, AL. Book A, p.

Co., TX. She was buried in Coker Cemetery, Bexar Co., TX. Children were:

in 1904/5 from California. He died on 29 May 1931 in San Antonio, TX. He was
a Gold miner 1902, after the death of his wife in Nevada/Arizona border. He
was buried in Coker Cemetery, Bexar Co., TX.

of the present airport served as a US Army Air Field. He died on 6 Oct 1942
