The oldest sons received their college degrees from Allegheny College, Meadville, PA. John Copeland Miller and Griffin B. Miller received their degrees from Transylvania College, Lexington, KY. Of the seven sons, three were preachers, two Methodist and one Lutheran. Two of the three were also teachers, two were contractors and builders, one was a lawyer and one farmer. All of the children, with the exception of two sons and two daughters married southern spouses. All of them, including the parents, settled at one time or another in and around Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, LA, known locally as the "Little Athens of America" attributable to the then location of Centenary College. He was married to Elizabeth GOODELL on 2 Dec 1813 in Cazenovia, Madison Co., NY.(83)

child i. Almerin G. MILLER was born on 5 Feb 1815 in Poltny, Steuben Co., NY. (86) He died on 18 May 1888 in Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, LA.(87) He was buried after 18 May 1888 in Old Jackson Cemetery, Jackson, LA. (88) He was a Methodist Minister.(89) Almerin was also a teacher at Centenary College, a writer and newspaper correspondent, and chaplain of the Grand Masonic Lodge of LA.

child v. Rev John Copeland MILLER was born on 21 Sep 1822 in Wales, Erie Co., NY. (96) He was a Methodist Minister, College Administrator and teacher in 1845 in Centenary College, Jackson, West Feliciana. LA.(97) (98)(99) John Copeland Miller taught higher mathematics in Centenary College, Jackson, LA during the ten years preceding 1845. He then became president of the institution, in which capacity he served until 1865, when the college was closed for the duration of the Civil War.
The College of Louisiana was established in 1825 as a boy's school. In 1845, it was purchased as a home for the Methodists and became Centenary College. The library was considered the best in the South when the Union troops destoyed it. The West Wing dormitory survives without the main building and East Wing. In 1840 Centenaria was built on 38 acres of land as the residence of the President. Dr. Miller and his family were the first occupants of the elegant two story building with seven bedrooms and a large living room separated by sliding doors from the music room
After the war, he conducted Millwood Institute, a female college, in Jackson, LA, until the Fall of 1876. He came to Chappell Hill, TX, as President of Soule University, which consolidated with Georgetown University, Georgetown, TX. He died on 29 Jan 1878 in Chappel Hill, TX.(100) He had a Masonic burial in Chappell Hill, TX

child vii. Goodell Merrick MILLER was born on 12 May 1828 in Buffalo, NY. (103) He was educated in 1853 in Centenary College, LA. (104) He received a BA degree. He was a Lawyer and District Judge between 1867 and 1872 in St. Francisville, LA. (105) History of Avoyelles Parish, LA page 132 Bench and Bar says he was a judge in the 7th District. He died on 23 Dec 1871 in St. Francisville, LA.(106) He was buried in Grace Cemetery, St. Francisville, LA.(107) He served in the military.(108) as a Major in the Confederate Army.
